Series for 2021 - Jesus is In!
“He Is” goes through the books of the Bible highlighting things about Jesus, the Messiah
“In Joshua, He is salvation's choice”
Personified in:
Joshua (our leader into the promised land)
In the Promised Land
In the Commander of the Army (Josh 5:13-15)
In Joshua He is the Captain of our salvation.
Many of us have heard of the falling of the walls of Jericho, but Joshua has an encounter just before that great event.
Please stand as we honor the reading of God’s Word
Joshua 5:13–15 NIV
13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” 14 “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?” 15 The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
The WORD OF GOD, for THE PEOPLE OF GOD

Messenger

Messenger
Theophany
appearance of God to a person often to deliver a message
In the OT often occurs at mountains, but seen at springs, rivers and trees.
Moses and the burning bush is a great example
Mt. Sinai aka Mt Horeb - Moses, Israelites, Elijah
As a force of nature - storms, smoke, thunder/lightning, earthquakes
In human form - walking in the Garden; men visiting Abraham; wrestling all night with Jacob - leads us to a similar “big” word
Christophany
human form - pre-incarnate Christ
Trinity - 3 in 1:
1st - Father on the throne
2nd - Son in human form
3rd - Spirit everywhere and within
Jesus, the 2nd person of the Trinity - forever linked to human form - while remaining fully divine - not just true in NT but in the OT when seen in entire context
“Angel of the Lord” - of His Presence - of God - of the Covenant
sometimes turns out to be God himself; angels do the very bidding of God; if not, they are banished from Heaven like Satan
Either way:
The Message is Divine!

Commander

Commander
Only One Side
“Who’s side are you on anyway?”
Joshua is very concerned about this mighty warrior he has encountered
Getting ready to take Jericho - continue into the Promised Land
Just crossed the Jordan - now they have to take down a fortified city
I love the warrior’s response. “NEITHER SIDE - only GOD’S!”
We may not be in the military but we still respond to “commands”
Ethics at work - audit questions about leadership - email preys on people wanting to appease the boss - “transfer money” - send me W-2s
Be careful the side you choose.
In the heat of the American Civil War, one of President Lincoln’s advisors said he was grateful that God was on the side of the Union.
Lincoln replied, “Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.”
Are we on God’s side?
Are you on God’s side?

Lord

Lord
Obedient Response
“Holy Ground!”
Holy - set apart - in the presence of the divine - receiving His message -
A moment or a place can be “Holy Ground”
Do we respond in obedience?
Do you respond in obedience?
Theophany? Christophany? Angels? Commander?
Just give me Jesus! The baby in the manger - the Saviour on the cross - the Risen Lord - the gospel message of Salvation - the Good News!
Holy places for the Holy One - set apart for God’s purpose and message of salvation
Yet Jesus is so much more!
In his revelation John says:
Revelation 19:11–16 NIV
11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: king of kings and lord of lords.
