Scripture - 1 John 1:5-10

1 John 1:5–10 NKJV
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
1 John 1:5–10 RVR60
God is Light (vs. 5)
In Him there is no darkness
Everything is visible to God and nothing can be hidden from Him
Darkness and light cannot co-exist
Light overcomes darkness, darkness cannot overcome light because darkness is the absence of light
Now John looks to us and compares our words and our actions
“If we claim to have fellowship with God but walk in darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth” vs6
To claim fellowship
Is to declare participation with or to draw an association to/with (in this case God)
The name CHRISTIAN is a claim to follow Christ.
To have Communion with and Fellowship with Christ.
It is a claim that Jesus Christ is the One you follow.
Fellowship comes from the greek word KoiNOnia
This is a joint participation or communion together.
There is Unity in KoiNOnia
There is commonality in this fellowship - That is Jesus
We cannot have communion/KoiNOnia/fellowship with God and walk in darkness
Walking in Darkness
is the choice to allow places in our lives where the Light is not permitted.
It is making choices that, in action, rejects Jesus’ authority giving preference to our own authority.
See, Jesus is the Way the Truth and the Life and
if you claim to have this communion with God - it is only found through The Way the Truth and the Life
but if your life choices gives an allowance for sin in your life,
You are lying and you are not living out the truth.
These are heavy words that are hard to receive.
Lord, allow us to receive what you are speaking to us today.
Praise God that He is a God of Redemption and Restoration.
v. 7 But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.
There is hope that we can walk in the light.
If you are feeling confused, let me share some quick facts that will help:
John is talking to Christians.
Christians do sin - choosing, at times, to walk in darkness
The Holy Spirit convicts us of that sin and now we have a choice
Will we walk in the light as He is in the light
or will we continue to walk in darkness, reject His authority, and reject Jesus’ work on the cross?
If we choose to walk in darkness, we die in our sin
If we walk in the Light as He is in the light
We have communion, KoiNOnia, fellowship with one another - why?
Because we have Christ as the head of the church in common.
We are partakers of the promises of God together.
We are choosing to put Jesus Christ first in our lives and that brings us a bond in fellowship the world cannot understand.
And the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin
Sometimes our focus is all wrong.
Sometimes we focus so much on “not sinning” or “how much can I do before God will cut me off”.
When our focus needs to be on “walking in the light as He is in the light”.
If you do something wrong, the Holy Spirit is going to convict you.
If your focus is on Jesus,
Your motivation changes - You do right because Jesus calls you to do right, not because you are afraid of hell
Your Joy of your Salvation is restored - Pride and selfishness steal the joy of your salvation because they make you the “master” and you forget you needed a savior in the first place.

Communion

1 Corinthians 11:23–26 NKJV
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
1 Corinthians 11:23–26 RVR60
