The Jesus Model For Ministry

JESUS RISKED BEING MIS-UNDERSTOOD

Mark 2:13-17

INTRODUCTION

Ministering Like Jesus Requires Risks

We must fulfill God’s purposes

We must spend time preparing to minister

We must love unbelievers

We must seek to meet needs

We Must Risk Being Mis-Understood By Others

Three Approaches to Ministry....

Imitation/Liberalism: The Sadducees

Isolation/Legalism: The Pharisees

Infiltration/Evangelism: Jesus

1A.       IMITATION/LIBERALISM: THE SADDUCEES

Motive: Popularity with the world; Success at any Cost!

Method:            Synchronism; Become like the World, Blend in.

Motto:              The Ends Justify the Means

2A.       ISOLATION/LEGALISM: THE PHARISEES

Motive: Purity of the church; Keep the World out at any Cost!

Method:            Separatism; Reject any adaptation to culture

Motto:              (2 Corinthians 6:17)  ""Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. ....""

3A.       INFILTRATION/EVANGELISM: JESUS

Motive: A Passion for the Lost

(Mark 2:17)  "On hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.""

Method:            Sensitivity; Meet unbelievers where they are...

(1 Corinthians 9:22)  "... I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some."

Motto:              (Luke 19:10)  "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.""

ACTION POINTS

1.         God Says to Us: “Go Tell!”

(Mark 16:15)  "He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation."

2.         We Say to Our Community “Come see!”

(John 1:39)  ""Come," he replied, "and you will see." ...."

(John 7:37)  "...Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink."

(Luke 14:23)  ""Then the master told his servant, 'Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full."

3.         Our Goal is to: “Be in the world but not of the world”

Like a salt water fish - in the ocean but not saturated with salt

(John 17:15)  "My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one."

4.         Make a list of Ways You Can...

Infiltrate your world without Imitating it’s Sin

Insolate your witness without Isolating yourself
