THE JESUS MODEL FOR MINISTRY

Jesus’ Strategy for Fishing for Men - Part Two

Mark 1:17

INTRODUCTION

The Jesus Model for Ministry

Every member a minister

Ministry is directed to unbelievers.

Jesus uses the Fishing Analogy on Purpose

He wants to teach us some Important Principles

We must...

Know what you are fishing for

Learn to think like a fish

Go where the fish are biting

Catch fish on their terms

Use more than one hook

Fish for the kind of fish you can catch best

1A.       CATCH FISH ON THEIR TERMS

Serious fishermen are willing to be uncomfortable in order to catch fish - How serious are you about fulfilling the Great Commission?

1 Corinthians 9:20‑22

(1 Corinthians 9:22 LB) “Whatever a person is like, I try to find common ground with him so that he will let me tell him about Christ and let Christ save him.”

1B.       The Needs of the Unchurched Will Determine Our Programs

(Mark 2:17)  "On hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.""

(Matthew 10:8)  "Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give."

Anyone can be won to Christ if you discover - The Key to his heart - His felt needs, hurts, interests

Before you can share the Good News, you must first get their attention

Our church will never grow beyond its capacity to meet needs

The primary felt needs today are emotional and relational

2B.       The Hant-ups of the Unchurched Will Determine Our Strategy

(Luke 16:8)  ""... the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light."

3B.       The Culture of the Unchurched Will Determine Our Style

(Luke 10:8)  ""When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you."

Who are we trying to impress?

4B.       The Population of the Unchurched Will Determine Our Goals

We do not grow to be bigger

We grow because people need the Lord!

2A.       USE MORE THAN ONE HOOK

Trotline Fishing

We live in a world full of Choices

Over 50 TV channels

200 new grocery items each week

300 new magazines/year

We must offer choices as long as we do not compromise the Message

Saturation Evangelism (Falwell)

Using every available means to reach every available person at every available time!

Why We Only Use One Hook

We ask the wrong question

How much will it cost?

We need to ask the right question

Who will it reach?

We Must Count the Cost

Money spent on evangelism is never and expense, it is always an investment

People give to vision, not to need

When you spend nickels and dimes on evangelism you get nickel and dime results

The coins are always in the mouth of the fish (Matthew 17:27)

“God’s work done God’s way will never lack God’s support.” Hudson Taylor

3A.       FISH FOR THE KIND OF FISH YOU CAN CATCH BEST

Go After Those You are Most Likely to Reach

Andrew - Peter; Matthew - Tax Collectors

Determine What Kind of People are Already Attending Our Church

Median Age = 34

Basically Middle Class

Rules of Thumb

I can reach people that I can relate to.

You attract what you AREnot what you WANT.

Good News - We Already Reflect Our Community!!!

ACTION POINTS

1.         Who do YOU have in mind when you plan YOUR ministries?

2.         Are you willing to be uncomfortable, to change in order to catch fish?

3.         How can we get more “hooks” in the water?  How does God want to use you to make this happen?  What new ministry is God leading you to begin?

4.         Are you committed to using every available means to reach every available person at every available time?  If not ask God to speak to your heart about this.

5.         If money has been an issue in your attitude toward evangelism ask God to make people the issue.

6.         Commit to go after the kind of fish you identify with, don’t get hung up on those you cannot reach.
