nEW WINE AVAILABLE HERE!

Mark 2:15-22

Introduction

We love New Things!

New cars

New gadgets

New clothes

Sometimes we get new things just because they are New!

Sometimes we get new things to replace old worn out things.

Take shoes for an example…

Ø      I hate to buy new shoes…

Jesus in our text introduce Three New Things…

Not just to have something new

Not to replace something old

But to fulfill everything that has come before

Jesus teaches us that Worship and Service are linked and are based on Three New Truths…

1A.      Jesus Gives A New Priority - To convert sinners not to compliment the Self-Righteous  (16-17)

1B.       Religion emphasizes Performance - Christianity emphasizes People!

(Mark 2:23-24, 27)  “One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. {24} The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath{27} Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”

2B.       Religion is Based on Rules - Christianity is Based on a Relationship!

(Mark 10:17, 21)  “As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?””(21)  “Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.””

3B.       Religion seeks to Restrain - Christianity seeks to Release!

(John 8:34-36)  "Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. {35} Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. {36} So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

4B.       Religion emphasizes Conformity - Christianity insists on Conversion!

(John 3:1-3)  “Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. {2} He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.” {3} In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.””

2A.      Jesus Gives A New Perspective - Worship should bring gladness, not Sadness  (18-20)

1B.       God's Presence brings Joy!

(Psalms 16:11)  "You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand."

(Psalms 21:6)  "Surely you have granted him eternal blessings and made him glad with the joy of your presence."

His presence insures us of new life, eternal life!

2B.       God's Provisions bring Joy!

(Psalms 37:25)  "I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread."

(Philippians 4:19)  "And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus."

His provisions insure that we will have all that we need; spiritually, emotionally, and physically!

3B.       God's Protection brings Joy!

(Jude 1:24)  "To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy--"

His protection assures us of our eternal security!

(John 10:28-30)  "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. {29} My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all ; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. {30} I and the Father are one.""

4B.       God's Promises bring Joy!

(2 Peter 3:13)  "But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness."

3A.      Jesus Gives A New Purpose - To bring Transformation, not just Reformation  (21-22)

1B.       Christianity is more than a New "Patch" on an Old Life!

1C.      Man would rather reform than to be transformed

Ø      Rich young man and Nicodemus both wanted to know "What they could do"

2C.      The reason is we cannot transform ourselves!!!!

(Ephesians 2:8-9)  “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- {9} not by works, so that no one can boast.”

3C.      Jesus came to transform not to simply reform

(2 Corinthians 5:17)  “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

4C.      Becoming a Christian will not simply make you act better but will make New!!!!

2B.       Christianity is more than just Part of the Answer

Popular thought today says, "There are lots of ways to get to heaven"

However, Jesus says…

(John 14:6)  "…  “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

(Acts 4:12)  “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.””
