Last week we looked at the Doxology… and made a great list of all the things we can be grateful for when it comes to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The New Bible Commentary 1:13–5:7 What Our Salvation Involves in Everyday Living

As Peter gives practical advice he constantly takes us back to the basics of the Christian gospel for the reason behind such behaviour. The salvation described so magnificently in the earlier section can and should result in men and women living as followers of Jesus no matter how difficult their circumstances may be.

What is the IMPERATIVE STATEMENT in verse 13?
Must be important… how then do we do that?
What is it talking about?
14
One way this looks… is by being obedient.
Then how do we be obedient? Or… how do we not conform ourselves to our previous passions...
Again… modeled for us in 15
15, 16
A focus on the HOLINESS of God.
In what ways does the text EMPHASIZE this point?
Appeals to our calling
Holiness is to inform EVERY part of our conduct
Refers to the OT (Leviticus 11:44)

44 For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. You shall not defile yourselves with any swarming thing that crawls on the ground. 45 For I am the LORD who brought you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.”

Refers to his covenant nature and rescuing past.
Also significant in that he appeals to both Gentile and Jew to consider this heritage as significant.
Both should consider the impact of a covenant God, a promise making deal making God, who has proven himself… not that he needed to, as the motivator for us to pursue holiness.
The New Bible Commentary 1:13–21 Living like Jesus

Holiness, Christlikeness, is urged upon God’s people for two reasons. It is our example (as his children we should reflect the family likeness) and it is our goal (when Jesus appears we shall be finally and fully like him; cf. 1 Jn. 3:2).

cf. 1 Jn 3:2
17 - 19
There are THREE reasons for this behaviour… maybe more… this holy behaviour.
Our Father God will judge his children as to how they have lived up to the family standards
We have been ransomed in order to live
And it is a GREAT HONOUR because it came at such a cost.
so… these are tough verses… but do you see how Peter focuses the reader on the finished work of Jesus each time!
We should not be surprised that God would expect his kids
