1 Timothy 5:17 KJV 1900
17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
Leaders, leadership - everyone wants to be one.
Many look to passages like this and feel like there is some personal gain in being a leader and so they pursue it.
Look to leadership because they want to be seen, up front, considered important
People think they are qualified to lead because of their personality.
I am a chloric personality so I am qualified.
They are sanguine so while they will push themselves forward, they don’t make the best leaders
They are melancholy so this group makes the best second chair personalities
Those phlegmatic, they don’t have the strength of personality to lead anyone, they are the followers
Good leadership ability is NOT about personality, rather Trainability, Commitment, and Discipline.
LEADER = (synonyms) guide, director, conductor, head, organizer
(antonyms) boss, ruler, manager, captain, superior
Phrases a leader should never say:
Because I said so!
Just do it!
Because I’m the boss!
Five Levels of Leadership
Position - authority
Manager (where your boss exists)
Why is it ok for your boss to remain at this level?
Because you are motivated to allow him/her to lead you because of a paycheck!
Lowest level of leadership
Empathize to show them you care
Praise good work to increase motivation
Deliver and receive constructive feedback to continually improve practices
Communicate with your team to ensure they receive the necessary information to successfully perform tasks
Should never be content with this level because the next is so easy.
Permission - ask
Gather consciences
They will feel connected and appreciated
Relate to them
“Hey, what do you think about this?”
“Do you think we could do this?”
We vs. you
Production - results
Here is where the team begins see true results
Here is where conflict resolution takes place
Listen and give instructions, adapt
Training
People development - growth of others
My personal goal, passion - make you into the best you, you can be
Move from addition to multiplication
Must be
consistent, honest, inclusive and easy to talk to
hard workers who lead by example
Mentors
Pinnacle - help others get to level four
Move from simple multiplication to exponential growth
Leaders with level four leaders under them
Vast majority of leaders lead from the first position of leadership.
Authority - boss
If you don’t hold a carrot dangling in front of their face (paycheck), then you will NEVER be successful in church leashership!
You will be resented.
People because they love God and the church may smile at you and say sure, giving you the impression of compliance but never complete the task they were asked to do.
Why?
Because no one likes the boss!
Most here are either curious about leadership or you hold some position in leadership.
NEVER rely on your position to get things done.
Move straight into the second level of leadership - lead by permission.
ie: snow storm coming this week.
Bro. Jonas comes and says - “I need you to shovel the walks tomorrow” or he says, “I’m looking for someone how can help shovel the walks tomorrow, can you help?”
What are you going to be most likely to respond to?
It depends on what Bro. Jonas has placed in your account!
LEADERS ACCOUNT: Leadership equity
Works just like a bank account.
You have this account with everyone you influence
Your every action makes either a deposit of a withdraw from the accounts of those you lead.
Currency to deposit: character
As a leader - every action you take is observed.
Lies vs. truth
Kind vs. ugly
Personal investment in an individual vs. not
EVERYTHING YOU DO MAKES EITHER A DEPOSIT OR A WITHDRAW
So how many times can it be demanded that you shovel the walks?
Vacuum the floors?
Take out the trash?
Scrub the toilets?
It all depends on how much the person demanding has deposited into your account!
So the goal as a leader is to make as many deposits as possible and as few withdraws as possible.
So lead by permission...
“Hey, can you help me shovel the walks tomorrow? Yes, what time can you be there?”
APOSTOLIC LEADERSHIP PRINCIPALS
Leadership is NOT:
Being the BOSS
self-serving - own ideas
Pushy
Leadership IS:
Position
Matthew 20:26 KJV 1900
26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
The greater the position, the greater the service
The higher you climb God’s ladder, the more you serve
2. Placement
2 Timothy 2:2 KJV 1900
2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
Everyone is a follower.
Paul, faithful men, other also
Everyone has someone above them and below them.
Be well led and lead well!
YOU ARE NOT AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN!!!
3. Knowning
Jeremiah 29:11 KJV 1900
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
Personal vision
Develop a personal mission statement
Know why you exist.
Proverbs 29:18 KJV 1900
18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: But he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
Church vision
Your vision should exist within the greater vision of the local church and the local church’s vision has to exist within the greater vision of the Church.
We lead by vision!
When you have vision and you are promoting the church vision
You will have no problems getting people to follow you!
Vision is contagious!
If you know WHY you need help shoveling the walks or cleaning the bathroom than you will have no problem getting people to do them and it will NOT be a withdraw from your leadership account!
Why? So no one will fall on the sidewalk...
Good reason FOR YOUR BOSS!
Why? Because 2980 Holdrege St is the place where everyone is a disciple, making disciples.
If I don’t get the walks shoveled than babies will not be born, infants will not be fed...
When I clean the bathrooms, I set the stage for the Holy Ghost to move…
When we understand the WHY, people will always follow!
AS A LEADER, MY GREATEST RESPONCIBILITY IS TO CONNECT THOSE THAT FOLLOW ME TO THE VISION ABOVE ME!
We lead by vision!
Vision enables people to buy-in to what is taking place.
