One Way Streets

How many of you know where main street is?

How many of you remember the Theater run by Vernon Stiles that was right next to Burrels Motor Company? You know on the street further down is Peoples Department store and the the Courthouse?

Of course you don’t because that’s the main street in my home town.

How many roads in Atlanta have the word Peachtree or a variant of that word in their name?

Peachtree Creek Road

Peachtree Lane

Peachtree Avenue

Peachtree Circle

Peachtree Place

Peachtree Drive

Peachtree Plaza

Peachtree Way

Peachtree Memorial Drive

New Peachtree Road

Peachtree Walk

Peachtree Park Drive

Peachtree Parkway

Peachtree Valley Road

The total is 71

You see many roads have similar names and from one town to another often the exact name.

Second (10,866)
Third (10,131)
First (9,898)
Fourth (9,190)

Then what about the pattern of traffic and its flow

Then we have to see that every road has some type of traffic pattern.

It may be interstate

It may be a two lane country road

It may be a one lane one way street

Or it may be a .... one way street
One Way
Or maybe One Way
Or maybe

An attempt was apparently made in 1617 to introduce one-way streets in alleys near the River Thames in London by The Worshipful Company of Carmen who were commissioned by the King to regulate traffic in the square mile of the City of London. The next one-way street in London was Albemarle Street in Mayfair, the location of the Royal Institution. It was so designated in 1800 because the public science lectures were so popular there.

According to the folklore of Eugene, Oregon, the use of one-way streets in the United States started in Eugene itself. In 1941 6th Ave was converted into a one-way avenue by the Highway Department.

Other sources claim the fad arose in relation to the disaster of the SS Morro Castle. On 9 September 1934, the on-fire SS Morro Castle was towed to the New Jersey shoreline near the Asbury Park Convention Center and the sightseeing traffic was enormous. The Asbury Park Police Chief decided to make the Ocean Avenue one-way going north and the street one block over (Kingsley) in one-way going south, creating a circular route.

Today we are going to concentrate on two roads.... both named works..... both are one way..... but they aren’t the same road and one has another feature we’ll discuss later.

Works

Ephesians 2:8–10 NKJV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Look and see that the word Works is used in a negative sense (not of works)

then

It’s used in a positive sense (“created in Christ Jesus for good works”

Two different roads.... both with the same name.... both headed in one direction … but not the same road.

A. So what are works

Works is a person’s actions or deeds. Work is that which we perform for some kind of reward. We work at our jobs and expect to receive a paycheck for it. Even working on a voluntary basis has its own reward—praise from others, a feeling of good will, etc. In the context of salvation, works refers to good deeds we do, especially religious or charitable acts or the observance of the Old Testament law.

Paul was quick to declare his works as insufficient

Philippians 3:4–9 NKJV
4 though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: 5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; 6 concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. 7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;

Evangelical Christianity is the only faith that says Faith Alone by Grace Alone

Works to obtain your Salvation are no different than works to retain your salvation.

Belief systems that believe Salvation is by Faith and Works.

*Catholicism....

They believe that Salvation (Justification) is solely due to God’s Grace .... we bring nothing to the table..... thus we are born into the Church. However to stay in the Church you must complete a set of works called sacraments. Baptism, confirmation, Eucharist, penance, anointing of the sick, marriage and holy orders. (The sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us.)

*Eastern Orthodox..... virtually the same as Catholics

*Mormon ......

They don’t believe everyone will get to go to the highest, celestial heaven, but to get there these works must be accomplished. Belief in Christ, Baptism (into the LDS Church), keeping all the commandments (including rules laid down by the LDS Church), receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost (by a Mormon laying hands on you), dependence on Christ’s Atonement and God’s grace to make you perfect

*Jehovah Witness....

The Watchtower article “What Must We Do To Be Saved?” states the following: “The apostle Paul and his associate Silas urged a sincere inquirer, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will get saved, you and your household’ –Acts 16:30-31
In other words, grace and faith only allow a person the opportunity to begin to earn his own salvation.

*Hinduism......

Till this period the teaching of the salvation through the way of knowledge was relevant to the intellectuals, Brahamans and to the sages. In this period a new concept was developed to make the way of salvation understandable to common people. The new way of salvation in this period was the way of devotion to any god, idol, river or mountain. To obtain the salvation the people worshipped idols, visited sacred places and observed several ceremonies. The idols were in the form of all kinds of human and animal representations, and even male and female organs.

*Islam.....

Profession of Faith (shahada), Prayer (salat), Alms (zakat), Fasting (sawm) and Pilgrimage (hajj)

* Any to a lessor extent any Protestant Faith that believes in losing your Salvation

Faith Alone by Grace alone

Baptist......

Salvation involves the redemption of the whole man, and is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, who by His own blood obtained eternal redemption for the believer.

In its broadest sense salvation includes regeneration, justification, sanctification, and glorification. There is no salvation apart from personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord.

B. So what is Faith

Hebrews 11:1 NKJV
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

The dictionary says that faith is (a complete trust or confidence in someone or something.)

The Bible says that faith is confidence in what we hope for and the assurance that the Lord is working, even though we cannot see it. Faith knows that no matter what the situation, in our lives or someone else’s, that the Lord is working in it.

The Hebrew word for faith is emunah (E-Moo-na) which means “support.” This is perfect because faith is like “the Lord’s support” to us because he is working in every situation for his glory.

You want to have your mind blown away....

Your faith (each persons faith) that brought you to Salvation was given to you and originates from God.

Remember our passage....
Ephesians 2:8–9 NKJV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

God provides not only the Grace but also the Faith

So what road called works is tied to our salvation

Pre-Salvation Works

Post-Salvation Works

C. Pre Salvation Works.

Let me first address our Pre-Salvation works
Ezekiel 18:24–26 NIV
24 “But if a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does, will they live? None of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they will die. 25 “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust? 26 If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die.
Remember I said there was a feature to one of the one way roads

The Pre-Salvation road is a dead end. It never accomplishes anything!

It’s the hardest conversation that I have.

People always want to tell me all the good they do.

People want to tell me the good their origination does.

All the good work you do before salvation is for nothing.

All the good work you do after salvation that is for self is all for nothing.

Revelation 20:12–13 NKJV
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.

D. Post Salvation Works

Its only what you do for Jesus that is a true GOOD WORK

Not only is it the only works that count.... its the only one demanded.

1 Corinthians 3:12–15 NKJV
12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.
Galatians 6:9–10 NKJV
9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.
Hebrews 13:16 NKJV
16 But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
James 2:14–21 NKJV
14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?
Colossians 1:10–12 NKJV
10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.
