There is a lot of teaching going on whenever we see mountains:
VS. 2 He opened his mouth and taught them.
This is the beginning of the teaching that Jesus taught with his disciples.
Notice here he opened his mouth. You do teach with your actions but words are powerful. Faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of Christ Paul said.
When Christ opens his mouth we better listen! It is God speaking!
1. If our we are going to have the right attitude we must pay attention to the teachings of Christ.
Every word of God proves true;
he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
2 Timothy 3:16
English Standard Version Chapter 3
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
He began to teach them by using the word BLESSED.
Makarios- of persons characterized by transcendent happiness or religious joy blessed, happy.
JMB said, “The word over time meant either consecration, praise, or happiness; and “bliss” became a term for spiritual joy.”
The world teaches that Happiness comes to those who won the power ball. Or maybe happiness comes to those who just recently invested money in Gamestop, AMC.. Robinhood a commission-free investing.
One lady said, “The next time everyone’s about to make a lot of money super easily could someone shoot me a text.”
James Montgomery Boice said, “The happiness spoken of here does not depend up circumstances and fills the soul with joy even in the midst of the most pressing circumstances.”
Jesus says Happy are the poor! What? This doesn't seems to be too attractive. No one desires to be poor?
Jesus is here telling his disciples to do the opposite of what the world is tell us to do today.
Happy are the poor in spirit Jesus says.
Question: Why do you think people listen to man?
Another way to say it is happy are the humble. If you want true happiness be humble.
2. If we are going to have the right attitude we must practice the life of Christ.
Jesus begins his teaching with instructing the disciples in a lesson in humility.
Jesus genealogy speaks to being poor in spirit. He came from a scandalous bloodline.
Jesus birthplace speaks to being poor in spirit. He was born in a manger Luke 2:1-20
Jesus homeplace speaks to being poor in spirit. He didn’t have anywhere to sleep. Luke 9:58
The life of Christ is a humble life!
James 4:6 God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
Proverbs 27:2 Let another Praise you and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.
Proverbs 29:23 One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.”
It is only those who are humble who enter into the kingdom of heaven. Pride elevates self, it shows that one desires to rule his own life.
D Martin Llyod-Jones said, “Being poor in spirit means a complete absence of pride, a complete absence of self assurance and self reliance. It means a consciousness that we are nothing in the presence of God. It is nothing, then that we can produce; it is nothing that we can do in ourselves. It is just this tremendous awareness of our utter nothingness as we come face to face with God. That is to be ‘poor in spirit.”
Questions: Why do you think many people lack humility?
The kingdom of God is the rule and reign of God. It is the presence of God. Those who will be in the presence of God will not be those full of pride but those who are poor in spirit.
3. If we are going to have the right attitude we must have the mind of Christ.
Philippians 2:3-11 Paul wrote in jail about the mind of Christ, “3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Having this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Many people want a position, prestige, or even a promotion without pain.
Those who inherit the kingdom are those who’s mind is in the right place.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Question: Why do you think people look to what they can see?
Dave Ramsey said, “The majority of people like to keep up with the Jones’s. He said the key to having a good future is living like no on else because in the future you will live like no one else.”
In order to do this one has to humble one self and realize life in the future! It’s having the right mindset.
These individuals minds were set:
Polycarp was a 2nd century Christian bishop of Smyrna said,
"Eighty six years I have served him, and He has done me no wrong", Bring forth what thou wilt." Polycarp was burned at the stake for refusing to burn incense to the Roman Emperor.
John Hus 1415
"God is my witness that the things charged against me I never preached. In the same truth of the Gospel which I have written, taught, and preached, drawing upon the sayings and positions of the holy doctors, I am ready to die today"
D Martin Llyod-Jones said, “Look to Him; and the more we look at Him, the more hopeless shall we feel by ourselves, and in ourselves, and the more shall we become more ‘poor in spirit’ . Look at Him, keep looking at Him. Look at the saints, look at the men who have been most filled with the Spirit and used. But above all, look again at Him, and then you will have thing to do to yourself. It will be done. You cannot truly look at Him without feeling you absolute poverty, and emptiness. Then you will say to Him, “Nothing in my hands I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling. Empty, hopeless, naked, vile. But He is the all sufficient One. Yeah, all I need, in The to find, O Lamb of God, I come.”
