Exegesis

Romans 12:1 NIV
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
Therefore - In light of this; in response to what has gone before
urge - encouragement
mercy - ‘compassion’ God’s unmerited kindness and grace to sinners
bodies - soma - whole person - life and activities
living sacrifice - holy, pleasing to God; alive to God, dead to sin; daily; set apart
worship - service latreia - duties in temple - believers are the temple and serve God in their bodies through spiritual (heart & mind) worship
temple of the Holy Spirit
Summary - In light of God’s mercy and kindness to us in Jesus, we are to offer (give) our whole self and whole life to God, through our lives marked by holiness (set apart to God) we worship and please God.
Romans 12:2 NIV
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Do Not - imperative/command
Be transformed - passive imperative - keep on being transformed
conform - assimilate
world - evil age
transform - metamorpho (total change from the inside out)
renewing of your mind - mental attitude - change comes from the mind
test/approve - prove by testing
God’s moral will
Summary
Do not assimilate to the way of this evil age but let your attitudes be transformed by the truth of GOd’s word. You will then be centain of God’s good will and purposes.
Live according to God’s will not your own.
Transformed from the inside out - mind informs your attitudes - want our attidutes to conform to God’s word not the world around us.
