The Sexy Salt
State it: There is something sexy about the humble salt -
by remaining true to its properties, salt allow other food to be transformed.
Illustrate it: Think about it. The presence of a pinch of salt transforms a bowl of bland soup into a flavoursome broth, which can itself be the basis of further transformation to create a nourishing stew.
All of that transformation is only possible because the salt remained true to its properties - its saltiness.
In the same way, when Christians are christians we can transform the world into a better place for everyone.

My name is Josh. I’m married to Valerie and we have two high-schoolers and we all love to cook in our family - some of us specialise in cooking in the middle of the night when hunger strikes.
Salt is such a basic ingredient in the kitchen and good quality salt adds further flavours that transforms other ingredients into cuisines. This can only happen when salt remains faithful to its properties.
In the same way, Christians who are really christians transforms the world into a better place.
Here we encounter our first difficulty with what Jesus is saying here. How can Christians not really be Christians? How can salt not be salt, unless it’s not really salt in the first place?
But that’s precisely the point that Jesus is making here.
Read it:
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its flavor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled on by people.
14 You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill cannot be hidden.
Explain it:
Notice that Jesus did not tell the Jews to imitate the properties of salt and light.
He reminds them - You are Salt. You are light. Jesus is reminding the Jews their true identity.
Only by remaining true to its properties can salt and light transform the world.
