POINT: Asking The Questions That Lead Us To Be Fully Devoted Followers of Christ! The Holy Spirit, The Baptizer - Part 2

GOAL: To communicate what the Word of God says about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit as to encourage and make the people of God hungry enough to seek it for their lives.

INTRODUCTION

(ME)

This message excites me because I have personally experienced the joys of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit in my own personal life. Coming out of a background (Baptist in particular) that did not believe in the Baptism of the Holy Spirit for today. I cannot count the times that this very thing has blessed me and helped me through countless things, and guided and empowered me.

(WE)

I also excites me because we get the opportunity to hear a message today that could potentially change your life almost as much as salvation itself. The empowering of the Holy Spirit to be a witness and what He can do is imperative in our lives. So, as we walk through this verses today, I encourage you not only to listen and take it in, but to go through the notes when you get home and through this week. Begin to ask God and seek Him for this if you have not already received. There is much joy that can be received through this. So, let’s embark upon our journey today.
MESSAGE
Today, I’m going to quickly answer 7 questions concerning the Baptism of the Holy Spirit - speaking specifically of The Individual Gift of Tongues and focusing on the gift of tongues as a personal prayer/praise language.

(GOD’s Word!)

What is the definition of tongues? or What does it mean to pray in the Spirit?
1 Corinthians 14:14
MEMORY VERSE!
1 Corinthians 14:14 NIV84
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
Without giving you pages of Greek to wade through the basic definition is “a language, with the possible implication of its distinctive form.
Here it is defined as a language with the possible implication of its distinctive form. We also see it described that in Acts 2:4 they understood, but in 1 Corinthians 14:2 they needed an interpreter.
Acts 2:4 NIV84
4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

33.2 γλῶσσαb, ης f: a language, with the possible implication of its distinctive form—‘language, dialect, speech.’ ἤρξαντο λαλεῖν ἑτέραις γλώσσαις ‘they began to talk in other languages’ Ac 2:4. The miracle described in Ac 2:4 may have been a miracle of speaking or a miracle of hearing, but at any rate people understood fully, and therefore it seems appropriate in this context to speak of ‘languages’ in contrast with 1 Cor 14:2, in which case people required an interpreter if they were to receive the presumed content of the speech (see 33.3).

1 Corinthians 14:2 NIV84
2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.

33.3 γλῶσσαc, ης f: an utterance having the form of language but requiring an inspired interpreter for an understanding of the content—‘ecstatic language, tongue, ecstatic speech.’ ὁ γὰρ λαλῶν γλώσσῃ οὐκ ἀνθρώποις λαλεῖ ἀλλὰ θεῷ ‘he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God’ 1 Cor 14:2. Most scholars assume that the phenomena described in Ac 2:4 (see 33.2) and in 1 Cor 14:2 are significantly different in that in one instance people understood in their own regional language or dialect and in the other instance an interpreter was required. It is for that reason that many interpret γλῶσσα in 1 Cor 14:2 as ecstatic speech, which was also an element in Hellenistic religions and constituted a symbol of divine inspiration.

“an utterance having the form of language but requiring an inspired interpreter for an understanding of the content ‘ecstatic language, tongue, ecstatic speech.”
There are two explanations prominent today. The one holds that it is antiquated (old fashioned), foreign, unintelligible, mysterious utterances. The other sees in glossolalia a speaking in marvelous, heavenly languages.
1 Cor 13:1 tell us:
1 Corinthians 13:1 NIV84
1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
The Why’s (2 of them)
Why does God want every individual to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues?
Why does the individual have to speak in tongues to show that they are baptized in the Holy Spirit?
(#1) Why does God want every individual to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues? (3 Things!)
It is a Promise to be received!
Acts 1:5
Acts 1:5 NIV84
5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
Acts 1:8
Acts 1:8 NIV84
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 11:16
Acts 11:16 NIV84
16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’
It is given for our strengthening and for our witness!
Jude 20 (remember 1 Cor 14:14)
Jude 20 NIV84
20 But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 14:14 NIV84
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
Here we see that we are to continually build (present, active) ourselves up in our most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit. What does it mean to build ourselves up in our most holy faith? Let’s take a look at what it means.
45.5

45.5 ἐποικοδομέωa: to build or construct something on some specified location—‘to build upon.’ θεμέλιον ἔθηκα, ἄλλος δὲ ἐποικοδομεῖ ‘I laid the foundation and another man is building upon it’ 1 Cor 3:10.2

1 Corinthians 3:10 NIV84
10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds.
74.15
Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 74.15 οἰκοδομέω; ἐποικοδομέω; οἰκοδομή, ῆς

74.15 οἰκοδομέωb; ἐποικοδομέωb; οἰκοδομήc, ῆς f: to increase the potential of someone or something, with focus upon the process involved—‘to strengthen, to make more able, to build up.’

οἰκοδομέωb: οἰκοδομουμένη καὶ πορευομένη τῷ φόβῳ τοῦ κυρίου ‘built up and living in reverence for the Lord’ Ac 9:31.

ἐποικοδομέωb: ἐποικοδομοῦντες ἑαυτοὺς τῇ ἁγιωτάτῃ ὑμῶν πίστει ‘build yourselves up on your most holy faith’ or ‘… by means of your most holy faith’ Jd 20.

οἰκοδομήc: κατὰ τὴν ἐξουσίαν ἣν ὁ κύριος ἔδωκέν μοι, εἰς οἰκοδομὴν καὶ οὐκ εἰς καθαίρεσιν ‘according to the authority which the Lord has given me to build you up, not to tear you down’ or ‘… to strengthen and not to weaken’ 2 Cor 13:10.

When we talk about building ourselves up the Greek literally defines it as “to build or construct something on some specified location”
Illustration: Build something with blocks on a specified location (table)
or “to increase the potential of someone or something, with focus upon the process involved - to strengthen, to make more able, to build up.”
Illustration: lifting weights - a couple of dumb bells
Illustration: Write a letter to Kaylene that will build her up and read it to her in front of the congregation.
We can see that the end result that Jude was talking about is exactly what God wants for us. God wants us to be built up, he wants our potential to be increased (as far as a witness in what we say and do - how we live), and He wants to be made more able. Think of how this lines up with what he said would happen in Acts 1:8 when He told the disciples to go and wait in the upper room.
Acts 1:8 NIV84
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Furthermore, we must ask ourselves what God is building. Is He concerned about constructing physical buildings? No! Is He concerned about building His church (His people)? Yes, most definitely! Into a holy temple and priesthood.
1 Peter 2:4-5
1 Peter 2:4–5 NIV84
4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
When Jude wrote this he told us exactly how we were to do this also - he told us to pray in the Holy Spirit. Now, we need to define what it means to pray in the Holy Spirit. This is not something we have to make up, but we can use the hermeneutical rule defining/interpreting scripture to see what he means. We have to go no further than 1 Corinthians 14:14.
1 Corinthians 14:14
1 Corinthians 14:14 NIV84
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
Paul here tells us that when we pray in a tongue our spirit prays and our mind is unfruitful. Why do you think that he says our mind is unfruitful? Because we do not understand what we are praying. This is explained in Romans 8:26-27.
Romans 8:26-27
Romans 8:26–27 NIV84
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.
Here, Paul tells us that when the Spirit prays He helps us in our weaknesses. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express . . . and the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will. So, whenever the Spirit prays:
He prays for our weaknesses - that we don’t even know
He prays in accordance with God’s will
Furthermore, 1 Corinthians 14:4 tells us this:
1 Corinthians 14:4
1 Corinthians 14:4 NIV84
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
We can see that 1 Cor 14:4 says that if we speak in a tongue we edify ourselves. let’s take a look at this word. You will find that it comes from the same root word that we find in Jude 20 for “building” therefore giving us that same meaning.
45.1 - as seen above
74.15 - as seen above
This word, just like the word in Jude, is telling us that it is “to make or erect any kind of construction, to build or to construct” or “to increase the potential of someone or something, with focus upon the process involved, to strengthen, to make more able, to build up.” We can see that 1 Corinthians 14:4 and Jude 20 are speaking of the same things.
It opens up a whole new dimension of intercession and spiritual warfare for the believer.
Ephesians 6:18
Ephesians 6:18 NIV84
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
(#2) Why does the individual have to speak in tongues to show that they are baptized in the Holy Spirit? (2 reasons)
It is the biblical evidence/sign that an individual has received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. There is no other evidence of such.
If we are going to be able to pray in the Spirit, we must pray in tongues according to 1 Corinthians 14:14.
1 Corinthians 14:14 NIV84
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
The What’s (2 of them)
(#1) What does the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues do for the individual? (This question was answered in the Why’s.)
(#2) What else does scripture tell us about speaking in tongues on the individual level?
There are several things that we can learn about the personal/individual gift of tongues from Paul’s teaching in 1 Corinthians 14. This chapter is primarily correcting the Corinthian church for it’s abuse issues in the corporate body, but there are several things that we can pick up from Paul. let’s investigate these now.
1 Corinthians 14:5
1 Corinthians 14:5 NIV84
5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.
In 1 Corinthians 14:5 we see that Paul makes the statement “I would like every one of you to speak in tongues.” This is clearly a teaching about the individual/personal gift of speaking in tongues. Why? Because Paul knows very well that when it comes to the gift of tongues being manifested in the corporate setting that not everyone will operate in this gift. What we see here is that Paul is agressing with God’s desire of all Christians being able to pray in tongues on a personal level. As he goes on through this verse we see him also address the abuse issue in the Corinthian church. But, in the church “I would rather have you prophesy.” Why? So that the whole church may be edified and not just the individual.
1 Corinthians 14:15
1 Corinthians 14:15 NIV84
15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.
In 1 Corinthians 14:15 we find Paul making the statement “I will pray with my spirit (speak in tongues - 1 Cor 14:14), but I will also pray with my mind (pray in his known language); I will sing with my spirit (sing in tongues), but I wil also sing with my mind (sing in his known language).” paul is making a volitional statement that he will pray in both tongues and in his known language, and he will also sing the same way.
1 Corinthians 14:18-19
1 Corinthians 14:18–19 NIV84
18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.
In 1 Corinthians 14:18-19 we see that Paul says “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.” If we stick to the corporate setting that he has been dealing with concerning the abuse issues of Corinth, this is rather a strange statement. But, when we continue into verse 19 we find that he uses the conjunction “but”. This signifies something different - a change of thought. he is clear in this change of thought also. paul says, “But in the church . . .” This gives us clear inderstanding of what paul was talking about. paul’s statement “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you” is clearly not in the church, but in his own private prayer time. The change of thought that he gives by saying “But in the church” starts his correction/direction toward how the gift of tongues is to be used in the corporate setting. Next week we will cover more as we look at the way the gift of tongues is to be manifested/used in the corporate setting.
The Where’s (1 of them)
(#1) Where does the individual have to go to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues?
No further than asking Jesus who is the Baptizer of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 3:11
Matthew 3:11 NIV84
11 “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
Mark 1:8
Mark 1:8 NIV84
8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Luke 3:16
Luke 3:16 NIV84
16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
John 1:33
John 1:33 NIV84
33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
Acts 1:4-5
Acts 1:4–5 NIV84
4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
Acts 11:16
Acts 11:16 NIV84
16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’
The When’s (1 of them)
(#1) When can an individual receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues?
Anytime from salvation forward.
The Who’s (2 of them)
(#1) Who can receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the individual gift of speaking in tongues?
Anyone who has received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
(#2) Who do we speak to when we speak in tongues, and who understands us - on the individual/private level?
The scriptures tell us in 1 Corinthians 14:2
1 Corinthians 14:2 NIV84
2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.
The word tells us that when we speak in tongues on the individual level that we speak to God. We do not speak to men. Now, who understands us when we pray in tongues on the personal level? Scripture gives us clear direction here in 1 Corinthians 14:2 also. Since we are speaking a heavenly/spiritual language, no one understands us except for God. our spirit utters mysteries to the human mind. i also believe that from this scripture we can say that our enemy cannot understand us either - it is only God who understands us.
The How’s (1 of them)
(#1) How can an individual receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues?
Just Ask!
Luke 11:9-13
Luke 11:9–13 NIV84
9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

(YOU)

So, the question is what are YOU going to do about this? Do you desire the fullness of God that can help you to be a witness and to build yourselves up in the Holy Spirit?

CONCLUSION

(WE)

I want you to envision living a life full of the Holy Spirit! A life where you experience the joy of knowing that God is always working for you. A life that when you are not sure of something because of whatever conflict, that you can go to prayer in the Holy Spirit and be encouraged and built up.
