INTRODUCTION

And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. 59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. 61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. 62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Last week we saw the man who was willing but not realistic and that the Love of Christ can overcome the obstacle of not being realistic when following Christ! Paul said in 2Co. 5:14 that “14 For the love of Christ constraineth us---which means that the LOVE OF CHRIST COMPELS & CONTROLS US…Theologians Plummer and Barret say, “the verb means to hold together, to press together, to constrain. The verb implies (the force of the Greek language) the pressure which confines and restricts as well as controls. The present tense implies the continual habit of life.
Jesus said to the Jews in John 5:42, But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you...
So this is a reminder that we keep THE LOVE OF CHRIST AT THE FOREFRONT OF OUR LIVES!
Today we see another man in Luke 9:59-60 who was in the way with Jesus but did not follow.... The text says And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
1. THIS MAN IS WILLING TO FOLLOW JESUS BUT HE WAS NOT READY.
HE USED THE EXCUSE OF FAMILY RESPONSIBILITIES TO KEEP HIM FROM FOLLOWING JESUS. IF THOSE FAMILY RESPONSIBILITIES WERE NEEDED AT THE TIME HE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THERE IN THE WAY WITH JESUS. HE SIMPLY WANTED TO WAIT AND CARE FOR THE THINGS OF THIS WORLD INSTEAD OF COMMITTING TO JESUS.
Clearly, he did not understand the Love of Christ nor the Life of Christ.
Henry Drummond said, “The entrance fee into the kingdom of heaven is nothing: the annual subscription is everything.”
It has been said that, “Salvation is the miracle of a moment; discipleship is the process of a lifetime.”
In Luke chapter 9 we see THE LIFE OF CHRIST MAGNIFIED as he and his disciples minister to the people.
Luke 9:7 states, Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed----Herod…heard of all that Jesus did…and he was puzzled. the life of Christ was being published/talked about and Herod had beheaded John the Baptist who was the forerunner of Jesus.
Herod obviously had no desire to be a disciple of Jesus.
From the BIBLICAL COUNSELING FOUNDATION:
“The supreme challenge you will face in making Christ-honoring, biblical changes is dying to self. The biblical perspective of ‘self’ is exactly opposite to what the wisdom of the world proclaims.”
Christs life was not hidden but was revealed to the world everyday he was on this earth.
