The Pronoun Problem: For I to We (Marriage is from God) Genesis 2:23-25

The purpose of this series is to understand marriage.

Where it is from. What is the purpose? How do I live it out?

When it comes to marriage God has the first and last word!

Adam never said to Eve “How come you don’t cook like my mother?”

Eve never said “You aren't the only man I could have married”

Husband: How come you don’t make biscuits like my mother use to?

Wife. How come you don’t bring home dough like my daddy use to?

Marriage is made in heaven that humans got a hold of and sprinkled it with Hell.

Let us See what God has to say!!!

Genesis 2:18–25 CSB

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper corresponding to him.” The Lord God formed out of the ground every wild animal and every bird of the sky, and brought each to the man to see what he would call it. And whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal; but for the man no helper was found corresponding to him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place. Then the Lord God made the rib he had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man. And the man said: This one, at last, is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called “woman,” for she was taken from man. This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh. Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.

Made for Me (Gen 2:18-22)

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper corresponding to him.”

Previously God said “Everything was good”

Amongst all these good things they could not satisfy Adam. (Think about that before and in marriage!)

God planned a wife for Adam (“Man should not be alone”)

Man needed a Companion

Man needed a Helper (Cooperation)

To help him reach maxim potential

Wind to a Fire (Fan it up or blow it out)

The Man was completed (Better half/Other half)

Completer not Competitor

Communication

To each other

To the world

Of All the Institutions Marriage came first.

Marriage is from Heaven!!

Marriage is for Companionship!

19. God brought unto Adam

His powers of perception and intelligence were supernaturally enlarged to know the characters, habits, and uses of each species that was brought to him.

This is important!

Think of the names of the animals (Hippopotamus (River Horse), Platypus (Flat foot), Octopus (Eight Feet)

He knew that none of these things were for him. (The DIFFERENCE was the DIFFERENCE)

20. but for Adam there was not found a help meet for him

The animals had not equality with Adam

Animals had mates.

God did not use help as a “VERB” but as a “NOUN”

You need to understand this

Not you Hand Maid but your Help Meet!

Marriage is for Partnership!

21. deep sleep… took one of his ribs… brought her to the man...

God provides the anesthesia and performs the first surgery.

She was not formed out of his head (She might have thought she was greater)

Not from his feet (To be walked on)

From his rib (To be equal and close to his heart. To be dear to him)

God didn't give Eve a Father, not a Brother, not a Sister but a HUSBAND!!

Adam and Eve would meet each other's deepest needs!

Marriage is the highest Institution on Earth (Families make Governments, Governments make Economies, and Economies cause the need for Education. )

Marriage is the deepest relationship you have.

23. And the man said:

This one, at last, is bone of my bone

and flesh of my flesh;

this one will be called “woman,”

for she was taken from man.

In Hebrew this is an Expletive (Not a Curse word) but expression of excitement

She didn't look like the lizards and giraffes...

She was like him

“Woman”- “Ish -isha” means “man-ess) Soft with power

They differed from all the other pairs in that they were ONE!

This is the miracle of marriage!

Here is why God hates divorce.

24. This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.

God is not talking geographical location

Adam and Eve had only God as an in-law.

God is saying “Cut the Emotional Umbilical Cord!”

We are to continue to honor our fathers and mothers

One of the Purposes of marriage is that Marriage is Forever!

The protection of the family is rooted in a commitment

1 +1=1 God’s Math

The were not ashamed

No intimidation

No threat

You won't win a war with your mate!

It's a war against yourself (You damage her, you damage yourself.)

Marriage is for Companionship

Marriage is for Partnership

Marriage is for Forever

Jesus is the great Home Builder

He wants you to have three homes

A Family Home

A Church Home

And a Heavenly Home
