SF727 - WE CALL HIM FATHER - 2 HOW TO PRAY - JESUS WAY (Matthew 6 9 -13)
Matthew 6:9-13
Introduction
The Importance of Prayer
Ø True prayer centers on God’s glory.
John 14:13 “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”
Ø True prayer results in our joy.
John 16:24 “Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.”
“Prayer is beyond any question the highest activity of the human soul. Man is at his greatest and highest when, upon his knees, he comes face to face with God.” (D. Martyn Lloyd Jones, SINTSOTM, 2:45.)
“Prayer is fitting at any time, in any posture, in any place, under any circumstance, and in any attire. Prayer is to be a total way of life; it is an open communion with God that continues at all times.” (MacArthur, TDP, 20.)
This is not a prayer simply to be recited
Prayer is not talking at God, prayer is talking with God!
This is a model prayer for all Christians
There are six petitions in this prayer, the first three focus on God’s glory, the second three focus on man’s need.
An outline of the prayer
Ø “Our Father who art in heaven” – God’s paternity
Ø “Hallowed be Thy name” – God’s priority
Ø “Thy kingdom come” – God’s program
Ø “Thy will be done” – God’s purpose
Ø “Give us this day our daily bread” – God’s provision
Ø “Forgive us our debts…” – God’s pardon
Ø “Lead us not into temptation…” – God’s protection
Ø “Thine is the kingdom…” – God’s preeminence
Two truths are revealed in verse 9
The Believers Relationship with God – “Our Father”
The Believers Reverence for God – “Hallowed be Thy Name”
1A. The Believers Relationship with God – “Our Father”
1B. He alone is God.
1 Corinthians 8:6 “yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him…”
2B. God is the creator of everything.
Colossians 1:16 “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-- all things have been created through Him and for Him.”
Psalm 100:3 “Know that the LORD Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves...”
3B. God is not the universal the father of all people.
Ø Creation does not imply fatherhood.
John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
1 John 3:1 “See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.”
4B. God is the father of those whom He has chosen, those who are born into his family.
John 1:12-13 “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”
Galatians 3:26 “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”
5B. God is the believer’s heavenly father.
God cares for us. (Matthew 6:26)
Ø What farmer would feed his chickens and starve his children.
God corrects us. (Hebrews 12:5-8)
Ø His discipline is an expression of His love for us. (12:6)
Ø His discipline is an assurance of our salvation. (12:8)
God shows compassion to us.
Psalm 103:13 “Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.”
Galatians 4:6 “Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’”
“Abba” = Daddy

2A. The Believers Reverence for God – “Hallowed be Thy Name”
