Mark 9:43-48
-------a. When Jesus speaks of Cutting off body parts, He is not speaking in a literal sense but instead magnifying the drastic effects of sin. If the command was followed literally it would go against scripture.
Deuteronomy 14:1- says “You are the children of the Lord your God; you shall not cut yourselves nor shave the front of your head for the dead.”
[into the fire that shall never be quenched] -The Greek term for ‘hell’ is geenna (gey-ena) - or in English- Gehenna. Jesus states that in hell the worm never dies and the fire never goes out.
Jesus’ images of the undying worm and the unquenchable fire teach the unending torment awaiting those who die under God’s wrath.
The awfully vivid idea of an undying worm, forever consuming an unconsumable body, is taken from the closing words of the prophet Isaiah. (Is 66:24)
-Revelation 14:10-11-
