Changed to See
ILL- 1990's Magic Eye Art
We can’t change ourselves. God changes us when we surrender to him.
WE are trying so hard to change when we really just need to surrender.
Verse 1 began with a cry of desperate need to see God.
Cry changes to desire to be changed.
Isaiah 64:8-12
8 But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.
9 Be not so terribly angry, O Lord, and remember not iniquity forever. Behold, please look, we are all your people.
10 Your holy cities have become a wilderness; Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.
11 Our holy and beautiful house, where our fathers praised you, has been burned by fire, and all our pleasant places have become ruins.
12 Will you restrain yourself at these things, O Lord? Will you keep silent, and afflict us so terribly?
3 Areas God Changes So We Can See
Authority (8)
Authority (8)
Isaiah 64:8
8 But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.
“Father”= declaration of relationship and submission.
Submit to authority of parents.
Jesus gave us example.
Luke 2:46-52
46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.
47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
48 And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.”
49 And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”
50 And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them.
51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.
Potter- declaration of complete surrender.
Clay does nothing on its own to take shape,.
The Potter is 100% responsible for the final product.
The clay bends under the slightest pressure.
Fluid- not flexible.
Guilt (9)
Guilt (9)
Isaiah 64:9
9 Be not so terribly angry, O Lord, and remember not iniquity forever. Behold, please look, we are all your people.
Forgiveness
“Be not so terribly angry...”=
Admission that it was deserved but a cry to God for it to end.
“Remember not iniquity forever.”
Psalm 103:8-12
8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever.
10 He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
This ultimately comes through Jesus Christ.
He removes our sin.
Hebrews 9:13-14
13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh,
14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
1 John 1:7
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Perspective (10-12)
Perspective (10-12)
Changing Perspective is like changing your glasses prescription.
3 Ways Your Perspective Needs to Change
Change Your Perspective on Discipline (10)
Change Your Perspective on Discipline (10)
Isaiah 64:10
10 Your holy cities have become a wilderness; Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.
Punishment vs discipline (10)
Discipline always has purpose to change your actions.
God was not punishing Israel. he was disciplining them so they could continue the work he called them.
Hebrews 12:6
6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
Proverbs 12:1
1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.
Chip Ingram “That’s an understandable emotion for a frustrated parent to have, but when action flows out of that emotion, parenting has taken a turn for the worse. That dynamic will eventually render your efforts to raise godly children ineffective, and here’s why: The idea of punishment implies repaying someone with what he or she deserves. That’s the antithesis of the gospel. Punishment produces a child laden with guilt and determined to get out from under it and Christlikeness is never the result. An effective parent has to learn the difference between punishment and discipline.”
See Graph
Punishment
Purpose is to inflict penalty for an offense
Focus on past misdeeds
Attitude of hostility and frustration by parents.
Results in fear and guilt
Discipline
Purpose is to train for correction and maturity.
Focus is on the future correct acts.
Attitude is love and concern on part of parent.
Results in security for kids.
God disciplines his children. he is trying to make us better so we can be useful for future work.
Change Your Perspective on Consequences (11)
Change Your Perspective on Consequences (11)
Isaiah 64:11
11 Our holy and beautiful house, where our fathers praised you, has been burned by fire, and all our pleasant places have become ruins.
Consequence (11)= the residual effect from the sin- sin hurts those around you.
Collateral Damage
Anger
Addiction
Lust/Adultery
We do not have to live in guilt- but at the same time don’t think that your sin doesn’t have consequences.
Change Your Perspective on Severity (12)
Change Your Perspective on Severity (12)
Isaiah 64:12
12 Will you restrain yourself at these things, O Lord? Will you keep silent, and afflict us so terribly?
What is your greatest fear of losing?
Worst punishment= God’s silence.
Is knowing God the most precious thing in your life?
Job- he lost his family and all his wealth- but he always knew he still had God. It hurt, but he knew he hand’t lost that which was most important.
Do you think like that? Is your relationship with God more important than any other relationship in your life? Job? Family?
Revival comes when we seek God’s face.
Do we want to see God?
God covered Moses with his hand in the cleft of the rock so he could get a glimpse of His glory.
Today we are cleansed by the blood of Jesus.
CONCLUSION
Are you ready for God to change your life?
Are you living a life of surrender?
