What is the Truth?

John 18:36–38 ESV
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.
Merriam Webster
Truth: 1) The body of real things, events, and facts (ACTUALITY)
2) The state of being the case (FACT)
1 Corinthians 15:3–5 ESV
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
Semantics- meaning of words and phrases
Jesus is His name- Deliverer = Salvation
Christ is His title- Developer= Sanctification
Lord is His position- Dominion = Sovereign
Jesus is the Christ and Jesus is Lord!
Syntax - arrangement of words or phrases- When the Bible says Jesus Christ, the focus is on His humanity. When the Bible says Christ Jesus the focus is on His deity!
Let’s talk about the truth of what I just said. The truth is they way you perceive Jesus is the way to receive Jesus!
Is He just Jesus? (a good man, a good teacher, a prophet…still on the cross?)
Is He the Christ? ( God manifested in the flesh and nothing less?)
Is He my LORD? (owner, ruler, master?)
Luke 6:46 ESV
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?
Matthew 16:15–19 ESV
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Our potential in life depends on our revelation of the Christ. In order to unlock our salvation, we have to know the truth! The whole truth, and nothing but the truth!
Here are some truths about Jesus and who He really is!
In scripture Jesus was the Son of God before He was the Son of Mary!
John 1:1–3 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
John 1:14 ESV
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
He appears in the Old Testament
John 8:58 ESV
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
Genesis 18:1–2 ESV
And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth
Many people say this is just three angels but there is something to note here that gives reference that it was the preincarnate Christ. First it says the Lord appeared to him. And in the final part of the verse it says he bowed himself to the earth. Men do not bow before angels in the Bible. Lets look at the next verse.
Revelation 22:8–9 ESV
I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”
Jesus wrestles with Jacob.
Genesis 32:22 ESV
The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
Genesis 32:23 ESV
He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had.
Genesis 32:24–25 ESV
And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him.
Genesis 32:26–30 ESV
Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him. So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.”
Then we see Jesus again in the book of Daniel.
Daniel 3:24–25 NKJV
Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished; and he rose in haste and spoke, saying to his counselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?” They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.” “Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”
Prophetic Announcement of His Coming (Gods plan before the foundation of the world)The coming of Christ Jesus was foretold by Micha, Isaiah, Daniel, Hosea, Jeremiah) they prophesied He would be born of a virgin, He would be called King, betrayed, pierced,in His hands, feet and side .
He is the mediator between God and man.
1 Timothy 2:5 ESV
For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
Let me ask you tonight do you know the truth?
Do you know Christ Jesus?
How do you know Him?
Is He a good man that lived a good life?
Is He a prophet from days long gone?
Is He a man who was wrongly murdered and still lays in a borrowed tomb?
Do you know the truth about who Jesus is?
You see Jesus told us several times in the Bible who he is. The words are seldom capitalized but are of so much importance. Let me take you briefly to the book of Exodus to make my point about who Jesus really is.
Exodus 3:13–14 ESV
Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”
Notice the words that are capitalized as God describes himself as the I AM
now lets look at the Gospel of John
John 6:35 LEB
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. The one who comes to me will never be hungry, and the one who believes in me will never be thirsty again.
John 6:36 ESV
But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.
John 8:23 ESV
He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
John 8:58 ESV
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
John 9:5 ESV
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
John 10:7 ESV
So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.
John 10:36 ESV
do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?
John 11:25 ESV
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,
John 14:6 ESV
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
You see the truth is Christ Jesus. Jesus is the I AM, Jesus is the one who came to save us from our sins.
There is no other name under heaven by which man can be saved! The truth is not a thing the Truth is Christ Jesus.
