Matthew 6:11

Introduction

True prayer centers on God’s glory.

John 14:13 “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”

True prayer results in our joy.

John 16:24 “Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.”

This is a model prayer for all Christians

There are six petitions in this prayer, the first three focuses on God’s glory, the second three focus on man’s need.

We are commanded to pray.

Luke 18:1 “Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart”

1 Thessalonians 5:17 “pray without ceasing”

James 5:16 “…  The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”

Review

We have discussed God’s paternity and priority (6:9).

We have examined God’s program and purpose (6:10).

Today, we will examine God’s provision.

Ø      The source of God’s provision

Ø      The subjects of God’s provision

Ø      The substance of God’s provision

1A.      The Source of God’s Provision – “Our Father”

1B.      God is the sovereign provider

Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the LORD'S, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it.”

Psalm 89:11 The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; The world and all it contains, You have founded them.

2B.      God is a gracious provider

1 Corinthians 4:7 “For who regards you as superior?  What do you have that you did not receive?  And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?”

Matthew 5:45 “…He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”

James 1:17 (NKJ) “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above...”

3B.      God is a good provider

Matthew 7:9-11 “Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he?  If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!”

2A.      The Subjects of God’s Provision – “Give Us” (Psalm 37)

1B.      Those who “trust in the Lord” (37:3)

Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.”

2B.      Those who “delight in the Lord” (37:4)

Philippians 4:4 “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!”

3B.      Those who “commit their way to the Lord” (37:5)

Proverbs 16:3 “Commit your works to the LORD And your plans will be established.”

Psalm 55:22 “Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.”

1 Peter 5:7 “casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.”

4B.      Those who “rest in the Lord…” (37:7)

Psalm 40:1 “I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me and heard my cry.”

Psalm 62:5 “My soul, wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him.”

5B.      Those who “cease from anger…” (37:8)

Ephesians 4:31 “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.”

David’s conclusion (37:25)

3A.      The Substance of God’s Provision – “Our Daily Bread”

1B.      The schedule for God’s provision – “this day”

Ø      The meaning here is simply that of regular, day-by-day supply of our needs.

Ø      We are to rely on the Lord one day at a time.

“To accept the Lord’s provision for the present day, without concern for our needs or welfare tomorrow, is a testimony of our contentment in His goodness and faithfulness.”  (MacArthur)

2B.      The specifics of God’s provision – “daily bread”

“Bread is the symbol for everything necessary for the preservation of this life, like food, a healthy body, good weather, house, home, wife, children, good government, and peace.”  (Martin Luther, Smaller Catechism on the Lord’s Prayer)

God provides food for us.

Genesis 1:29-31 “Then God said, ‘Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food’; and it was so.  God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good.  And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.”

God provides clothing for us to wear.  (Matthew 6:28-30)

God provides everything we have and need.

Philippians 4:19 (NKJ) “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Application

Matthew 4:4 (NKJ) “…It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”

There is more than one kind of Bread

John 6:48 (NKJ) “I am the bread of life.”

Every piece of bread is the result of the death of a kernel of wheat.

Jesus is heaven’s bread for man’s hunger.

He died so that you and I could have our deepest hunger met!

Have you had your fill of the Bread of Life?
