SF737 - Jesus Lord of All - 4 JESUS THE GIFT THAT GIVES FOREVER (Luke 2 1-20)
Luke 2:1-20
Introduction
He is Lord…
He is Lord, He is Lord, He is risen from the dead, and He is Lord.
Every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
What does the word “Lord” mean to you?
Maniacal ruler
Tyrant
Some guy in knickers who sits around letting other people wait on him?
What does it mean to call Jesus Christ Lord?
The angels called Him Lord (2:11)
For centuries, we have called Him Lord, but what does it mean to call Jesus Lord?
When you call Him, Lord what do you mean?
Let us look at what the scripture says it means to call Jesus Lord!
1A. When We Declare Him Lord Of Our Lives, We Confess His Sovereignty
1B. He is God incarnate.
The word “Lord” in the NT is equated with Jehovah in the OT!
John 1:14 (NKJV) 14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
Philippians 2:9-11 (NKJV) 9Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
2B. He is Lord of all.
kurios; from kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller
Psalm 99:2 (NASB) 2The LORD is great in Zion, And He is exalted above all the peoples.
Psalm 145:3 (NASB) 3Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised, And His greatness is unsearchable.
2A. When We Demonstrate His Lordship In Our Lives, We Confirm Our Salvation
1B. The proof of regeneration is repentance and obedience.
Acts 26:20 (NASB) 20but kept declaring both to those of Damascus first, and also at Jerusalem and then throughout all the region of Judea, and even to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds appropriate to repentance.
John 14:15 (NASB) 15“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
2B. Lordship and salvation are inseparable.
Romans 10:9-10 (NKJV) 9that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Our confession is both personal (heart) and public (mouth).
Matthew 10:32-33 (NKJV) 32“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
C.H. Spurgeon
“If the convert declares that he knows the Lord’s will but does not attend to it, it is your duty to assure him that he is not saved. Do not imagine that the gospel is magnified or God glorified by going to worldlings and telling them that they may be saved at this moment simply by accepting Christ as their savior, while they are wedded to their idols and their hearts are still in love with sin. If I do so I tell them a lie, I pervert the gospel, I insult Christ, I turn the grace of God into sin.”
3A. When We Proclaim His Lordship To Others, We Build The Kingdom
1B. We encourage the Saints
By our words
1 Thessalonians 4:18 (NASB) 18Therefore comfort one another with these words.
Titus 1:9 (NASB) 9holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
By our walk
Hebrews 10:25 (NASB) 25not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
2B. We evangelize unbelievers
Psalm 126:6 (NASB) 6He who goes to and fro weeping, carrying his bag of seed, Shall indeed come again with a shout of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.
Romans 10:13-14 (NASB) 13for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?
Application
Do you believe in the Lordship of Jesus Christ?
Is He your Lord?
Lord of your tongue?
Lord of your thoughts?
Lord of your time?
Lord of your treasure?
He is not your Savior unless He is your Lord
Acts 2:36 (NASB) 36“Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”
What courage it took to call this baby in a manger Lord
To the Jew this was blasphemy. To the Gentile this was treason. For both it could mean their lives.
It will cost you today
Matthew 6:33 (NKJV) 33But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Everything must go including self!
