Big Idea-Love your neighbor

Luke 10:29–37 NKJV
But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Tie into meta scripture

This sums up the law.
God has a standard but he still loves you.

Incorrect assumptions:

I can’t tell the truth and love them.
I don’t want to hurt peoples feelings
In order to love them, I have to agree with them.
Being a loving neighbor is about being superior.
You can know how to love others but not know how to love their self

Correct understanding:

Can agree to disagree

How does it feel:

Shamed when they understand it
Convicted
Confusion
Angry
Love is more than a feeling, its an action.

Walk through the story
Luke 10:27–39 NKJV
So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ” And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word.
Take a look at Leviticus
Leviticus 19:17–18 NKJV
‘You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
Leviticus 19:33–34 NKJV
‘And if a stranger dwells with you in your land, you shall not mistreat him. The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as one born among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
1.Don’t hate your brother
2.Reason with them
3.Don’t take vengeance
4.Don’t mistreat a stranger
5.Take them in like family
6.Love them as yourself within the context of love them like they are Jewish.
7.You know how it feels to not belong so Love them as a neighbor - love them like they belong in your neighborhood
Take aways from story:
Who is my friend? That is my neighbor.
Who is my aquantence? That is my neighbor.
Who is my enemy? That is my neighbor.
bring attention to the last of the story. This guy hated samaritans so bad, that he couldnt even voice that the neighbor was a samaritan.
Luke 10:37 NKJV
And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
Who should I love? My neighbor
