SF751 - THE SECRET OF THE SABBATH (Genesis 2 1-3)
Genesis 2:1-3
Introduction
Do you ever grow weary?
We live in a fast-paced, hurry-up world.
We get tired in a hurry.
We need balance in our lives
We are to work – but we are also to rest.
What does it mean to “rest in the Lord?”
How do we “rest in the Lord?”
The answer to these questions is found in the Secret of the Sabbath.
The purpose to the Sabbath was to provide an opportunity for man to rest…
1A. The First Rest (2:1-3)
1B. Why did God rest?
God did not rest because He was tired.
Isaiah 40:28 (NASB) 28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth Does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable.
God rested to emphasis what He had done (music).
2B. When did God rest?
God rested when the work of creation was complete.
2A. The Formal Rest (Exodus 20:8-11)
1B. The Principle of Work
We were created to work. (Genesis 2:15-16)
We are commanded to work
Exodus 20:9 (NASB) 9 "Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
2 Thessalonians 3:10 (NASB) 10 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either.
2B. The Principle of Rest
We need rest because we are created body, soul and spirit.
Rest will replenish the spirit
Ø You can become spiritually run down.
Rest will refresh the soul
“All we have added to society is speed and noise.” V. Havner
Rest will restore the body
Ø A woodchopper does not waste time sharpening his axe.
3B. The People of the Sabbath (Exodus 31:12-17)
God gave the Sabbath to the Israelites not to the Church
God gave the church the first day not the last day.
We worship on the First Day, the Lord’s Day because
Ø Jesus rose on the first day of the week. (Mark 16:9)
Ø He met with the disciples on the first day of the week. (John 20:19-20)
Ø The Holy Spirit came on the first day of the week. (John 20:22)
Ø Pentecost took place on the first day of the week.
Ø The early Christians met on the first day of the week. (Acts 20:6-7; 1 Corinthians 16:2)
The First Day should be
Ø A day of joy! (Acts 2:42-46)
Ø A day of worship! (John 4:24)
Ø A day of witness! (Matthew 28:10)
Ø A day of expectation (Psalm 66:5)
4B. The Prophecy of the Sabbath (Col 2:14-17)

3A. The Faith Rest
1B. The Principle of Work
God worked six days and rested the result was creation!
Jesus worked and rested the result was salvation!
In the Old Covenant men worked so that they could rest.
In the New Covenant we rest so we can work.
2B. The Principle of Rest
In the Old Covenant rest was the reward for work
In the New Covenant rest is the preparation for work
In the Old Covenant man worked in order to, earn his rest!
In the New Covenant man works because Christ has provided his rest.
3B. The People of the Savior (Ephesians 2:8-10)
Three prepositions…
Ø By grace – there is nothing to earn
Ø Through faith – it is based on what Christ has done
Ø For good works – The work follows the rest!
Jesus worked and rested so we could rest before we work.
Ø We are to begin our week with Jesus in order to have what we need to walk with Jesus!
Application
We need to stop trying and start trusting. (Heb 4:1-3)
Put your faith where God has put your sin – On Jesus!
If you do not have the Faith Rest, you will never have the Final Rest!
