sf753 - I HAVE FALLEN AND CAN_T GET UP (Genesis 3 1-7)
Genesis 3:1-6
Introduction
Man is not on the way up – he is on the way down
2 Timothy 3:13 (NASB) 13 But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
Man’s nature is evil not good.
Romans 5:12 (NASB) 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—
Sin entered the world through Satan
Satan is a decided fact
Ø Three chapters in from the beginning to the Bible Satan appears for the first time.
Satan is a destructive force
Satan is a defeated foe
Ø Three chapters from the end he is mentioned for the last time.
Satan is still active in our world leading men to sin…
His methods have not changed since Eden…
Ø He appears in places where we least expect.
Ø He appears in forms we do not expect.
Ø He works in ways we do not expect.
“cunning” = wise
Ø His motive is murder and his method is the lie.
1A. The Fall Begins with a Doubt (3:1)
1B. Satan questions the authorship & authority of God’s Word
“Indeed, has God said…”
2B. Satan questions the accuracy of God’s Word
“Indeed, has God said…”
3B. Satan questions the acceptability of God’s Word
God’s Word conflicted with her desire.
Anyone who causes doubt concerning the Word of God is doing the work of Satan.
4B. If Satan can cause us to doubt he can defeat us
Trying to serve God with doubt in your mind is like trying to drive a car with the brakes on.
2A. The Doubt leads to Denial (3:2-4)
1B. Eve mishandles God’s Word (3:2-3; 2:17)
She did not value God’s Word enough to know it.
2B. Satan denies God’s Word (3:4)
Satan tries to tell us that God does not punish sin
Romans 6:23 (NASB) For the wages of sin is death…
Ezekiel 18:20 (NASB) "The person who sins will die…
Numbers 32:23 (NASB) "But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out.
Ø No one ever gets away with sin
God is too good not to punish sin.
Ø Law without punishment is simply advice.
If a dog has four legs and you call his tail a leg how many legs will the dog have? Four.
3A. The Denial Leads to Deception (3:5)
1B. Satan deceives us into believing we can live without God
This is primarily a spiritual sin
He wants us to be religious.
Ø The devil would rather send you to hell from the pew than from the gutter.
2B. Satan deceives us into believing that we can be our own God
He did not tempt Eve to fall down but to climb up.
Ø That is why Satan never shows us the final consequences of sin.
3B. Satan deceives us into believing that we can be our own authority
Whatever feels good – do it!
Matthew 15:18-19 (NASB) 18 "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. 19 "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.
We are sinners within!
Ø If the devil died, we would keep on sinning.
4A. The Deception Produces Desire (3:6)
1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world -- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life -- is not of the Father but is of the world.
1B. The desire to do something – “wanting to please our sinful selves” – “good for food”
2B. The desire to have something – “wanting the sinful things we see” - “delight to the eyes”
3B. The desire to be something – “being too proud of what we have” - “desirable to make one wise”
4B. Satan perverts the God-given desires in our lives.
We need to fulfill our desires God’s way
5A. The Desire turns into a Decision (3:6b)
1B. It is our decision - “she took of its fruit…”
Man will always act according to his own desires.
Only the Holy Spirit of God can draw us to God
Ø When the HS draws us, then we will decide to come.
2B. When we choose to sin our choice will become a chain.
John 8:34 Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.
6A. The Decision brought Death (3:6c)
1B. Eve died progressively in the soul
That is why we must have our minds renewed
2B. Eve died ultimately in her body
That is why we must have our bodies re-made.
3B. Eve died immediately in the spirit
She was cut off from God
That is why we must have a new birth!
Salvation is being restored to a relationship with God.
Romans 3:10-12
Ø “None Righteous” – the standard is the righteous of God not the deeds of man.
Isaiah 64:6 (NASB) 6 For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
Ø “None who understands” – No understanding of spiritual things
1 Corinthians 2:14 (NASB) 14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.
Ø “Non who seeks for God”
John 6:44 (NASB) 44 "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
7A. The Death produces Defilement (3:6d)
1B. The sinner becomes the seducer.
She brings Adam into her sin
2B. Sin will never exist in a vacuum
If you go to Heaven, you will take others with you.
If you go to Hell, you will take others with you.
Application
We are all sinners by nature, choice, and practice
Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned --
We are redeemed by Christ
Romans 5:17 For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)
It is better to have what Jesus gives us than what Adam would have left us if he had never sinned.
You gain more in Jesus than you ever lost in Adam
Adam had natural life, we have supernatural life.
Adam was innocent, we are righteous
Adam was lord of Eden, we are heirs with Christ
Adam was able to fall, we are eternally secure.
