SF768 - GOD_S COVENANT WITH NOAH (Genesis 9 8-11)
Genesis 9:8-11
Introduction
The concept of covenant is basic to understanding the Bible.
Covenant = “berit” = to cut, to bind, to decide.
Ø God’s relationship with man is based on the covenants He has made with us.
Ø The covenants in the Bible are all initiated by God and each reflect His grace as well as His requirements.
Covenants have eight parts
Ø Preamble – the covenant maker identifies Himself.
Ø Prologue – the relationship between the parties is recounted.
Ø Stipulations – the requirements that must be met.
Ø Provision for the recording and periodic reading of the covenant.
Ø The curses and blessings associated with the covenant.
Ø The formal oath by which the recipient gives his pledge.
Ø A solemn ceremony that accompanies the oath.
Ø A method of enforcement is given.
There are seven covenants recorded in the Bible.
Adamic covenant: established man’s enjoyment of the garden; required obedience to God’s command. (Hosea 6:7)
Noahic covenant: deals with the earth and seasons, a new beginning. (Genesis 9)
Abrahamic covenant: concerns Israel’s occupancy of Palestine. (Genesis 15:18)
Mosiac covenant: concerns Israel’s continued enjoyment of God’s blessings. (Exodus 24:7; 8; 34:27)
Levitic covenant: deals with the priesthood. (Numbers 25:12, 13; Malachi 2:4, 5; Ezekiel 44:15)
Davidic covenant: concerns the Kingdom particularly the throne. (2 Samuel 23:5; 2 Chronicles 13:5)
Messianic or New covenant: concerns the Millennium (Isaiah 42:6; Jeremiah 31:31-34)
Six facts about Noah’s covenant…
1A. The Occasion of the Covenant
1B. God had judged the world because of sin. (6:5-8)
2B. It was a new beginning for the world (8:15-19)
Man was commanded to re-populate the world. (8:17)
The animals were released to re-populate the world. (8:18)
3B. Whenever God judges sin he offers a new beginning to man.
Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, Says the LORD, Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.
2A. The Source of the Covenant
1B. This is God’s covenant with Noah. (9:11-12, 15)
God is the giver man is the receiver.
2B. This is God’s covenant with all mankind.
Genesis 6:18 But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark -- you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you.
We are included because of Noah!
3B. We are saved because of Christ!
1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
3A. The Basis of the Covenant (8:20-22)
1B. The covenant was based upon sacrifice.
God provided the means for the sacrifice by grace.
Genesis 7:2 You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female
2B. Our covenant is based on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 7:27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people's, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.

1B. The promise of recurring seasons (8:22)
2B. The promise of continued blessing (9:1-3)
3B. The promise not to destroy the world by water (9:11)
5A. The Requirements of the Covenant
1B. The sacredness of the blood is to be observed. (9:4)
The blood represents life. (4:10-11)
The blood is sacred. (9:4-6)
The blood pictures God’s judgement on sin.
Exodus 4:9 And it shall be, if they do not believe even these two signs, or listen to your voice, that you shall take water from the river and pour it on the dry land. And the water which you take from the river will become blood on the dry land."
The blood provides a covering and shelter judgement.
Exodus 12:13 Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
2B. The sanctity of human life is to be maintained. (9:6)
Government was established to insure order.
Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
Capital punishment is based on the “Image of God” in man, not on man’s importance to God.
3B. The spread of the human race was to be renewed. (9:7)
This is a renewal of the God’s command to Adam. (Genesis 1:28)
Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
6A. The Symbol of the Covenant (9:12-16)
1B. The rainbow speaks of God’s nature.
Three primary colors: red, blue, and yellow
These colors together make light and light is made up of all the variations of these colors.
God is a Trinity and in Him is all that is needed to make life complete!
2B. The rainbow speaks of God’s mercy. (9:12-15)
It is God refusing to give us what we deserve.

The rainbow is a product of God’s justice and mercy.
Ø Light shining through the rain.
The rainbow points to heaven and reaches from horizon to horizon.
Ø The rainbow reminds us that God has extended His grace to all men.
Titus 2:11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men,
The rainbow has never changed. Neither has God’s way of salvation
