The Security of the New Life…

Everyone needs to feel secure in life.

Ø       Psychologists tell us that one of the strongest instincts in man is that of self-preservation.

Ø       Much of our time is spent in insuring ourselves against poverty, sickness, and death.

There is even a greater need, the need to feel secure in death.

The Bible declares we can have that security.

(2 Timothy 1:12 NKJV)  "… for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day."

Jesus said it best.

(John 10:27-29 NKJV)  "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. {28} And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.  {29} My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand."

Jesus gives us three immovable truths upon which our eternal security is based.

1A.      Our Security is Based on a Divine Relationship
John 10:28

1B.       A Personal Relationship  (28a)

A relationship with Christ

(1 John 5:11-12 NKJV)  "And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.  {12} He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life."

A relationship initiated by Christ

(John 10:10 NKJV)  "…I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly."

(Revelation 3:20 NKJV)  "Behold, I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me."

A relationship enter into by faith

(John 1:12 NKJV)  "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name."

2B.       A Permanent Relationship  (28a)

It is eternal life

Ø       It is a quality of life

(2 Peter 1:4 NKJV)  "… you may be partakers of the divine nature…."

Ø       It is a quantity of life - endless

It is enduring life – “shall never perish”

Ø       In the Greek that is expressed by a double negative, which is the strongest positive, you can find in Scripture.

Ø       “Perish” = ruination and purposelessness

Ø       Only in Christ is lasting purpose found.

2A.      Our Security is Based on a Divine Reliability
John 10:27

Jesus teaches us in these words that the reliability of eternal security is contingent upon:

1B.       The Authority of His Word  (27a)

It is a recognized authority

(Mark 1:22 NKJV)  "And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes."

It is a proven authority

(Matthew 24:35 NKJV)  "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away."

It is a promised authority  (27-28)

2B.       The Finality of His Work  (27)

One sacrifice

(Romans 6:10 NKJV)  "For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all….”

One salvation

(Hebrews 9:12 NKJV)  "Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption."

One sanctification

(Hebrews 10:10 NKJV)  "By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."

One faith

(Jude 1:3 NKJV)  "Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints."

3A.      Our Security is Based on a Divine Reassurance
John 10:28-30

1B.       The Savior’s Hand of Saving Grace  (28b)

This is the nail-pierced hand that has been stretched out to lay hold of us in saving grace.

The story is told of a child who was rescued by a fireman from a second story room.  The fireman placed the child on his back and scaled down a cast iron drainpipe to safety.

Years later, the child sought out his rescuer.  Upon finding him someone asked how, did he know that he was the same firefighter that saved his life?  “The young man replied by the scares on his hands.”

Can you say that you “know” the Savior?

2B.       The Father’s Hand of Sovereign Choice  (29-30)

He chose us before we could choose Him

(Ephesians 1:3-6 NKJV)  "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, {4} just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, {5} having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, {6} to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved."

He chose us before we would choose Him

(Romans 5:8 NKJV)  "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Application

Are you enjoying eternal security?  It is based on…

Ø       A Divine Relationship; A Divine Reliability; A Divine Reassurance

It begins with a personal relationship with Christ alone.

You can have this relationship by exercising FAITH.

F = Forgiveness:  We cannot have eternal life & heaven without God’s forgiveness.

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.  (Ephesians 1:7 NKJV)

A = Available:  Forgiveness is available.  It is…

Ø       For all – John 3:16

Ø       Not automatic – Matthew 7:21

I = Impossible:  For God to allow sin into heaven.

Ø       God is Love – John 3:16

Ø       God is Just – “For judgment is without mercy.”  (James 2:13)

Ø       Man is sinful – Romans 3:23

T = Turn:  Turn means to repent

Ø       Turn from something – sin and self

But unless you repent you will all likewise perish. (Luke 13:3 NKJV)

Ø       Turn to Someone – trust Christ only

… That Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, {4} and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, (1 Corinthians 15:3-4 NKJV)

Romans 10:9

H = Heaven:  Heaven is eternal life

Ø       Here – John 10:10

Ø       Hereafter – John 14:3

Ø       How – By F.A.I.T.H.

Introduction

People, wherever they are found, are afraid of insecurity, and much of our time is spent insuring ourselves against poverty, sickness and death. At the same time, most individuals give very little attention to their eternal security. Jesus taught that:

John 10:28

1B.       A _____________________ Relationship  (28a)

2B.       A Permanent Relationship  (28a)

1B.       The Authority of His ___________________  (27a)

2B.       The Finality of His ____________________  (27)

(Jude 1:3 NKJV)  "Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints."

1B.       The Savior’s Hand of Saving Grace  (28b)

2B.       The Father’s Hand of Sovereign Choice  (29-30)

Application

Eternal security is offered in Jesus Christ.  To receive Him is to share His life and become a partaker of the divine nature, to be secure and safe in His hand and that of the Father.
