2 Timothy 2:1-10

Introduction

The Death and Resurrection are cardinal doctrines in the NT

Gospels – the redemptive event

Acts – the redemptive experience

Epistles – redemption explained

It is the ground of salvation and the goal of sanctification and service.

Paul is writing his final letter.

He seeks to help Timothy not to falter or fail under the pressures of preaching or persecution.

He exhorts him to…

2 Timothy 2:8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead…

Ø      In other words, come what may, Jesus is alive!

Ø      That fact alone guarantees endurance now and final conquest in the hour of death.

What Paul says to Timothy is the ultimate message for you and me.

So as we look at our text we are presented with a threefold exhortation:

1A.      We Are to Remember the Proofs of the Resurrection

Here Paul is stating a fact which has the support of prophetic, historic and spiritual evidence.

1B.      The prophetic evidence (2:8b)

“Descendant of David” shifts our focus back to the prophetic utterances of the Old Testament

The promise of the coming savior (Genesis 3:15)

The promise of a conquering sovereign (2 Samuel 7:12-13)

The promise of the suffering servant (Isaiah 53:3-6)

2B.      The historic evidence (2:8)

It is both undeniable and irrefutable (1 Corinthians 15:3-8)

3B.      The spiritual evidence (2:8)

The text is better rendered: “Remember that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead.

Paul’s testimony was one of a living faith – “my gospel”

2 Timothy 1:12 For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.

2A.      We Are to Rely on the Power of the Resurrection (2:3-6)

These words constitute the basis of a threefold encouragement which Paul gives us in this passage.

1B.      As Christians, we are to endure for Christ (2:3-4)

Our persistence is commanded   (2:3)

Our preparation is illustrated (2:4a)

Our purpose is stated (2:4b)

2B.      As Christians, we are to obey Christ (2:5)

By running the race (2:5a)

By keeping the rules (5b)

3B.      As Christians, we are to depend on Christ (2:6)

We are to faithfully do our part

We are to trust God for the rest

John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

3A.      We Are to Relate the Message of the Resurrection  (2:8-10)

1B.      We must proclaim the Gospel whatever the cost (2:9)

In terms of popularity

“a criminal,” or an “evildoer,”

In terms of persecution

Ø      If we are not prepared to share his shame then we are not worthy to sit with Him on the throne

James and John wanted to sit on his right hand…

Philippians 3:10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death

2B.      We must proclaim the Gospel to whomever we can (2:10)

No one but God knows who the elect are.

The elect are scattered all over the world.

We are to preach the gospel to all people so that the elect may obtain salvation

Mark 16:15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.

Therefore, we cannot afford to choose our own mission field; we must go wherever God sends us.

Application

So the message of Easter is Jesus is alive!

God enable us to enter into the true meaning of the living Jesus!
