SF833 - THE PROMISE OF THE SPIRIT - 1 of 9 THE POWER OF PENTECOST (Luke 24 49)
Luke 24:49
Introduction
Series Background
The shameful negligence of the Person and work of the Holy Spirit is the great sin of the Christian Church, and the greater sin of the average believer. By willful ignorance or undisciplined thinking, we fail to recognize that we are still living in the age of Pentecost, and therefore should be experiencing the continual power of Pentecost.
We cannot read the Acts of the Apostles without being impressed with the fact that the members of the early church were supernaturally filled with the Holy Spirit. That was why the early church of Christ made its astonishing impact upon the contemporary world of its time. It is well, therefore, that we should rediscover the secret of these early Christians, and so appropriate more of the power of Pentecost.
The Savior’s word to His disciples still applies to us today: It is not a repetition of Pentecost that we need, but rather the realization that Pentecost has never ended.
With this in mind, consider three aspects of the promise of the Spirit:
1A. The Announcement of the Promise (Luke 24:49)
Perhaps the most comprehensive teaching of all that was involved in the sending of the promised Helper is found in what is known as the Upper Room discourse (John 14, 15, 16).
The Helper was to be:
1B. A Residing Comforter (John 14:16,17b)
Prior to Pentecost the Holy Spirit was periodically present with men.
After Pentecost the Holy Spirit is permanently present in men.
2B. A Revealing Comforter (John 14:26a)
He will guide us into all truth (John 16:13a)
He will tell us of things to come (John 16:13b)
He will glorify Christ by revealing Him to us (John 16:14-15)
3B. A Reminding Comforter (14:26b)
He not only quickens our minds to learn the truth, but to recall the truth.
Luke 12:11-12 (NKJV) 11“Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say. 12For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
4B. Reproving Comforter (John 16:7,8)
It is His function alone to convict the world of
Ø its curse, which is sin;
Ø its cure, which is righteousness;
Ø its condemnation, which is judgment.
It is impossible to convey eternal truth to the materialistic-minded of our day without the Holy Spirit, whose prerogative it is to show men “things to come.”
2A. The Fulfillment of the Promise (Acts 2:32, 33)
1B. There was an Immediate Fulfillment of the Promise (Acts 2:17, 18)
They experienced the power of God. (17a)
They received the prophecy from God. (17b)
They became the people of God (17-18)
Ø No discrimination
2B. There is to be an Ultimate Fulfillment of the Promise (Acts 2:20)
The ultimate fulfillment will be the second coming.
Ø It will be a preceded by signs and wonders. (Acts 2:19)
There may be a final revival
James 5:7 (NKJV) 7Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain.
Ø If the opening days of Pentecost represent the “early rain,” surely the closing days indicate the “latter rain” of revival.
3A. The Enjoyment of the Promise (Acts 1:8)
In that one word “power” is concentrated all that God has promised for this age of the Spirit.
And yet, how many of us know this power in our lives? How many of us enjoy the fulfillment of the promise?
1B. We Must Believe the Promise of the Spirit
Luke 24:49 (NKJV) 49Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; ...”
Luke 11:13 (NKJV) 13If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
2B. We Must Receive the Power of the Spirit (Acts 1:8)
We must obey the Lord (Acts 1:10-12)
Ø We are to go and do as He commands
We must seek the Lord (Acts 1:14)
Ø We are to continue to pray even when the answer is not immediate.
We must submit to the Lord (Acts 2:1-4)
Ø We are to yield to His cleansing and filling.
Application
Are you obeying the Lord?
Are you seeking the Lord?
Are you submitted to the Lord?
