Three-Fold Work of the Holy Spirit

His work for us - Salvation

(Acts 2:38)  "Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.  And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

His work in us - Sanctification

Galatians 5:22-23 - the graces of the Spirit, we become like Christ

His work through us - Service

The process whereby the Holy Spirit uses His gifts to enable us to faithfully serve Him.

Three Categories of Spiritual Gifts

Speaking gifts

Serving gifts

Sign gifts

1A.       HOW THE GIFTS ARE DESCRIBED

1B.       They are God’s Gifts (1-3)

They are not based on our emotions  (2)

“dumb idols” is a reference to pagan idolatry.  Paul was referring to the inability of the pagan idols to speak, to communicate with them.

They are based on our relationship with God.  (3)

2B.       They are grace Gifts  (4)

“Gifts” = charismata, grace, salvation gifts

These are your spiritual birthday gifts.

3B.       They are good Gifts  (7)

Given to be a blessing to others!

“Not toys to play with, but they are tools to build with!” Jerry Vines

2A.       HOW THE GIFTS ARE DESIGNED  (4-6)

1B.       They are specific  (4)

“diversities (varieties) of gifts”

Individuals have different gifts

2B.       They are supportive  (5)

“differences of ministries”

Everyone is gifted to serve, to minister

1 Peter 4:10 (NKJV) 10As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

Ø       This is key to personal and church growth!

Ø       One minister can handle ~100 folks

3B.       They are supernatural  (6)

“diversities of activities”

God provides the energy, power to do the work!

3A.       HOW THE GIFTS ARE DISTRIBUTED

1B.       Individually  (7)

“Each one”

Every believer is a gifted believer!

2B.       Sovereignly  (11, 18)

(1 Corinthians 4:7)  "For who makes you different from anyone else?  What do you have that you did not receive?  And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?"

4A.       HOW THE GIFTS ARE DISCOVERED

1B.       Do not worry about it.

2B.       Ask yourself three questions.

What do you enjoy?

What do others encourage you to do?

Farmer - PC in clouds “preach Christ”... “plow corn”

What desire has the Holy Spirit given you?

3B.       Surrender to the Spirit.

(Romans 12:1)  "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship.

We are “more interested in being ‘successful’ than in being submissive.”  (MacArthur, 293)

APPLICATION

The Real Source of Power...

Pump organ - little boy worked the bellows; no power no music.
