Revelation 10:1-11

INTRODUCTION

This is the time of the Great Tribulation

Satan is set loose on the earth

We are approximately 1/2 through the Tribulation period

This time is depicted by a scroll sealed with seven seals

We have broken all seven seals

Ø       Before the seventh seal was a parenthesis (chapter 7)

Seventh seal - seven trumpets

Ø       Six trumpets - not another parentheses (chapter 10 - 13))

We meet a Mighty Angel with a little scroll...

1A.      THE DESCRIPTION OF THE ANGEL (1-3)

1B.       His Character (1)

His might

Mighty = powerful

His majesty

Ø       Coming down from heaven

Ø       Robed in a cloud.

Revelation 1:7 (NKJV) 7Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

OT - God lead His people with a cloud

NT - Transfiguration: a cloud came down!

Ø       A rainbow on His head = Rainbow is the sign of His covenant!

(Revelation 4:3)  And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian. A rainbow, resembling an emerald, encircled the throne.

Ø       His face was like the sun

(Matthew 17:2)  There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.

Saul - Damascus Road

Ø       His legs were like fiery pillars

(Revelation 1:15)  His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace,...

Speaks of his ability to judge and purify!

His Identity

Ø       The Lord Jesus Christ

(Genesis 22:15)  The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time

2B.       His Claims (2)

His right to reign

Ø       the little book (scroll) = same as chapter 5; no longer sealed but now open!

His right to rule

Ø       “Right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land” = taking possession of all the earth!

(Deuteronomy 11:24)  Every place where you set your foot will be yours: ...

(Colossians 1:16)  For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.

3B.       His Cry (3)

He came first as a lamb - now as a lion!

A lion roars to petrify his prey!

(Joel 3:16)  The LORD will roar from Zion and thunder from Jerusalem; the earth and the sky will tremble. But the LORD will be a refuge for his people, a stronghold for the people of Israel.

(Revelation 5:5)  Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah,"

2A.      THE DECLARATION OF THE ANGEL (5-7)

1B.       A Sealed Message (4)

Thunder = God’s voice of judgement!

Seven Thunders = we do not know what they are!

Ø       May be too terrible for description.

2B.       A Sure Message (5-6)

Sure because God swears upon himself

(Hebrews 6:13)  When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,

What does it mean when God swears upon himself?

Ø       If it does not happen I will cease to be God!

3B.       A Solemn Message (6b)

“Delay....” = this world has had it’s chance!

Ø       Time has run out for lost man!

4B.       A Sweet Message (7)

Mystery will one day turn to manifestation!

God will one make sense out of this old senseless world!

We do not understand the mystery of God.

We should not ask “why?’ but “how will I react?”

3A.      THE DIRECTIONS OF THE ANGEL (8-11)

1B.       Receive the Word (8)

Scroll here represents God’s revelation

2B.       Digest the Word (9-10)

Sweet = God’s promises to His saints

Sour = God’s punishment of sinners

3B.       Share the Word (11)

APPLICATION

We like John must receive, digest and share God’s word - Faithfully, fully and fearlessly!
