Revelation 11:1-14

INTRODUCTION

During the Tribulation

This is a crisis in the Beast’s reign.

These two witnesses will defy all the might and authority of the Beast.

1A.      THE TESTIMONY OF THE MESSENGERS (1-13)

1B.       The Mandate of the Messengers (1-5)

1C.      The special place involved (1)

Ø       The Temple will be rebuilt - no temple in the day of John

(Isaiah 19:18)  In that day five cities in Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance to the LORD Almighty.  One of them will be called the City of Destruction.

During the 6-day war, the Israelites took from Egypt Sinai.  There are five major cities one called “El Aresh” = the city of destruction.  They teach Hebrew, “the language of Canaan.

Ø       Where will the Temple be built?

On the site of the Mosque of Omar

Since 1974 the Jews have been building a temporary temple ~1 mile from the site of the temple.

2C.      The specific period involved (2-3)

Ø       John measures the Temple and leaves out the court of the Gentiles (2)

42 months - 3.5 years - Second half of the Tribulation

1260 days = 3.5 - first half of Tribulation

Ø       Treaty with the Beast

(Daniel 9:27)  He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven.'  In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering.  And on a wing of the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him."

(Isaiah 28:15)  You boast, "We have entered into a covenant with death, with the grave we have made an agreement.  When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by, it cannot touch us, for we have made a lie our refuge and falsehood our hiding place."

Ø       The Broken Treaty

3C.      The supernatural power involved (4-5)

Ø       Moses and Elijah

They were used before (Luke 9:28-ff)

Ø       Elijah and Enoch

Olive trees = fruit; oil - the Holy Spirit

Lampstands = the light

2B.       The Miracles of the Messengers (6)

Three weapons...

Ø       Drought

Ø       Death

Ø       Disease

3B.       The Martyrdom of the Messengers (7-10)

1C.      The purpose of their martyrdom (7)

Ø       When they have finished = God’s man walking in the spirit is immortal until his work is done!

Ø       This will be a great day for the Anti-Christ

He will gain in power and popularity

He will consolidate his power

2C.      The place of their martyrdom (8)

Ø       The great city

Sodom because of its vice

Egypt because of its vanity

God will judge it because of its violence (Jesus was crucified).

Now it is the hellish city.

3C.      The publicity of this martyrdom (9)

4C.      The perversion of this martyrdom (10)

Ø       They think God has been silenced

Ø       Hell has a holiday (10) - perverted Christmas

4B.       The Might of the Messengers (11-13)

1C.      They have a triumphant resurrection (11)

(Luke 21:12‑18)  "But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you.  They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name.  {13} This will result in your being witnesses to them.  {14} But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.  {15} For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.  {16} You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death.  {17} All men will hate you because of me.  {18} But not a hair of your head will perish.

2C.      They have a triumphant rapture (12)

3C.      They have a triumphant revenge (13)

2A.      THE TESTIMONY OF THE ELDERS  (14-19)

The scene is heaven - Jesus in being crowned yet again...

Ø       Chapter 5 - title deed to earth and elders cast crowns at his feet

Ø       Chapter 11 - acknowledges as the earth’s rightful king

Ø       Chapter 19 - comes forth as the King of kings...

1B.       The Announcement of God’s Victory (14-15)

This ceremony settles the question of sovereignty!

Satan will try to become sovereign but will fail!

2B.       The Affirmation of God’s Goodness (16-18)

1C.      He reigns supremely (17)

2C.      He judges righteously (18a)

(Psalms 2:1‑3)  Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?  {2} The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One.  {3} "Let us break their chains," they say, "and throw off their fetters."

3C.      He rewards graciously (18b)

(2 Corinthians 5:9‑11)  So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.  {10} For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.  {11} Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.

3B.       The Assurance of God’s Faithfulness (19)

Focus in on the Ark - God’s presence!
