Daniel 9:1–7 NKJV
In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the lineage of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans—in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the Lord through Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. And I prayed to the Lord my God, and made confession, and said, “O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments, we have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments. Neither have we heeded Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings and our princes, to our fathers and all the people of the land. O Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face, as it is this day—to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those near and those far off in all the countries to which You have driven them, because of the unfaithfulness which they have committed against You.
Daniel 9:17–19 NKJV
Now therefore, our God, hear the prayer of Your servant, and his supplications, and for the Lord’s sake cause Your face to shine on Your sanctuary, which is desolate. O my God, incline Your ear and hear; open Your eyes and see our desolations, and the city which is called by Your name; for we do not present our supplications before You because of our righteous deeds, but because of Your great mercies. O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and act! Do not delay for Your own sake, my God, for Your city and Your people are called by Your name.”
Introduction:

I. UNDERSTAND THE PERIOD (Time)

Daniel 9:1–2 NKJV
1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the lineage of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans— 2 in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the Lord through Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
Explain the text: Daniel spent time reading the books or the writings of Jeremiah and found that Jeremiah prophesied that
Jeremiah 25:11 NKJV
11 And this whole land shall be a desolation and an astonishment, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
Here Jeremiah prophesied about the condition of the promised land and the fact that not just Israel/Judah but all nations will serve the king of Babylon 70 years. Furthermore, Daniel read in Jeremiah 29:10 that after 70 years are completed
Jeremiah 29:10 NKJV
10 For thus says the Lord: After seventy years are completed at Babylon, I will visit you and perform My good word toward you, and cause you to return to this place.
God will cause them to leave Babylon and return to the land of promise. He also read Jeremiah 30:18 where it states that God will do this based on His mercy
Jeremiah 30:18 NKJV
18 “Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will bring back the captivity of Jacob’s tents, And have mercy on his dwelling places; The city shall be built upon its own mound, And the palace shall remain according to its own plan.
Daniel knows God’s Will because he read the Book and then he understood what the Book communicated.
Daniel’s thoughts were shaped by the Word of God. Are your thoughts shaped by His Word?
God is calling for a proper understanding of the Word. God’s promise to release the people was not conditional! It was not based on them but on His mercy
Apply the text: Saints of God are you reading the Bible so that you can understand the time. Jesus said
Matthew 24:6 NKJV
6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
Have you read and understood 2 Peter 3:1-13
2 Peter 3:1–13 NKJV
1 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), 2 that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior, 3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
My brothers and my sisters
READ the Word everyday
READ it to Remember
READ it to RECITE
READ it to Rehearse the Word
And after reading it, Understand the Word; In all your getting get a good understanding. Understand the times
Pastors when you read the Book, you know why men will not endure sound doctrine.
2 Timothy 4:3 NKJV
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;
SAINTS when you read the Book, you will know why PEOPLE ARE SO SELFISH AND PRIDEFUL
2 Timothy 3:1–2 NKJV
1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
NOT ONLY SHOULD YOU UNDERSTAND THE PERIOD BUT YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE PLAN

II. UNDERSTAND THE PLAN: Set Your Face toward Him

EXPLAIN THE TEXT: AFTER UNDERSTANDING THE PERIOD HE WAS LIVING IN, WHAT SHOULD HE DO? THE ANSWER IS TO UNDERSTAND GOD’S PLAN.
HE READ THE BOOKS OF THE LAW AND REACTED IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER BECAUSE GOD’S WORDS WRITTEN BY MOSES
IN
Leviticus 26:39–40 NKJV
39 And those of you who are left shall waste away in their iniquity in your enemies’ lands; also in their fathers’ iniquities, which are with them, they shall waste away. 40 But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, with their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, and that they also have walked contrary to Me,
Leviticus 26:42–45 NKJV
42 then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham I will remember; I will remember the land. 43 The land also shall be left empty by them, and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them; they will accept their guilt, because they despised My judgments and because their soul abhorred My statutes. 44 Yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, nor shall I abhor them, to utterly destroy them and break My covenant with them; for I am the Lord their God. 45 But for their sake I will remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God: I am the Lord.’ ”
HE READ THE BOOKS OF THE LAW AND REACTED IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER BECAUSE OF SOLOMON’S PRAYER
IN
2 Chronicles 6:36–39 NKJV
36 “When they sin against You (for there is no one who does not sin), and You become angry with them and deliver them to the enemy, and they take them captive to a land far or near; 37 yet when they come to themselves in the land where they were carried captive, and repent, and make supplication to You in the land of their captivity, saying, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong, and have committed wickedness’; 38 and when they return to You with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity, where they have been carried captive, and pray toward their land which You gave to their fathers, the city which You have chosen, and toward the temple which I have built for Your name: 39 then hear from heaven Your dwelling place their prayer and their supplications, and maintain their cause, and forgive Your people who have sinned against You.

DANIEL COULD HAVE READ IN THE BOOK HOW A WICKED KING LIKE AHAB AVOIDED MORE CALAMITY. LOOK AT
1 Kings 21:25–29 NKJV
25 But there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do wickedness in the sight of the Lord, because Jezebel his wife stirred him up. 26 And he behaved very abominably in following idols, according to all that the Amorites had done, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel. 27 So it was, when Ahab heard those words, that he tore his clothes and put sackcloth on his body, and fasted and lay in sackcloth, and went about mourning. 28 And the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 29 “See how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the calamity in his days. In the days of his son I will bring the calamity on his house.”

James 4:8–10 NKJV
8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

III. UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE: For the LORD’s sake

Daniel 9:17–19 NKJV
17 Now therefore, our God, hear the prayer of Your servant, and his supplications, and for the Lord’s sake cause Your face to shine on Your sanctuary, which is desolate. 18 O my God, incline Your ear and hear; open Your eyes and see our desolations, and the city which is called by Your name; for we do not present our supplications before You because of our righteous deeds, but because of Your great mercies. 19 O Lord, hear!
