1 Peter highlight reel
1 Peter 1:1 ESV
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
1 Peter 1:3–7 ESV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:11–12 ESV
Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
1 Peter 3:9 ESV
Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.
1 Peter 3:15 ESV
but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
1 Peter 4:12 ESV
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.
1 Peter 4:19 ESV
Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.
Chapter 5 Outline
v. 1-4 (Elders, submit to God)
v. 5 (Members, submit to elders)
v. 6-11 (Trust God, resist the devil, hope in Christ)
v. 12-14 (Closing statement)

Elders, submit to God

1 Peter 5:1–4 ESV
So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
Why isn’t this in the submission section??
Why is this exhortation here at all??
Elders. Elder/Pastor/Overseer. All referencing the same office.
Elder (Presbyteros)
Pastor/Shepherd (Poimen)
Overseer (Episkopeo)
Office. Eldership is an office, formally established by the authority of the church. (1 Tim 3:1)
Identity —> Task
Exhort. Plead earnestly, invite, with encouragement, but also seriousness
Shepherd. To tend. Caring, leading, guiding, and protecting. This is an active process for which I will give an account (Heb. 13:17)
Exercising oversight. I am watching you. I will call you back when you wander. I will do my very best to lead you to Jesus.
Not under compulsion, but willingly
AS GOD WOULD HAVE YOU.
Not for shameful gain
Eagerly, not domineering, being examples
Chief Shepherd, submit to God… Let that be our motivation...
Hebrews 13:17 ESV
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

Members, submit to elders

1 Peter 5:5 ESV
Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Generally, leaders in the church were older men, although not always (1 Tim 4:12)
It is good to made a decision that you will be subject to the elders.
We are all ultimately submitting one to another as we all submit to Christ. (Rom 12:10, Eph 5:21, Phil 2:3)
1 Timothy 4:12 ESV
Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
Romans 12:10 ESV
Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
Ephesians 5:20–21 ESV
giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Philippians 2:3 ESV
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

What does it mean to submit?

(1) Let others see

Being open and vulnerable so people actually know what’s going on in your life
Transparency
1 John 1:7 ESV
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

(2) Let others speak

Acknowledging your blind spots and trusting community to help you
Vulnerability
Ephesians 4:14–16 ESV
so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

(3) Let others fail

To submit is to understand
Considering others better than yourself… Don’t think more highly of yourself than you ought...
The mind and attitude of submission comes from Christ (Phil 2)
