Genesis 13:14-18

Introduction

This incident in Abram’s life parallels Luke 18:18-30.

Abram had seemly lost everything

His land

His family

But God said it would all be his (13:14-17)

But he would have to do two things:

Lift up his eyes

Walk in obedience

1A.      Lift Up Your Eyes (13:14)

Unlike covetous Lot, Abram lifted up his eyes in obedience to God’s command.  We too need to lift up our eyes…

1B.      To the heavens (Isaiah 40:26-30)

When you feel discouraged, feel like God does not care about you… Look to the heavens!

When you fear the future… Look to the heavens!

When you feel all alone… Look to the heavens!

Look to the heavens and remember that the Lord is everlasting, He is the creator, He never grows tired or weary!

2B.      To the Father

Jesus models it (John 11:41-42)

God’s Word commands it

Matthew 7:7-8 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  8For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

James 4:2 You lust and do not have.  You murder and covet and cannot obtain.  You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask.

John 14:13-14 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  14If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.

3B.      To Jesus (Hebrews 12:1-3)

He is the founder of our faith!

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

He is the finisher of our faith!

Philippians 1:6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

We must focus on Jesus!

Ø      We are so easily distracted!  (Matthew 17:4-8)

4B.      To the harvest (John 4:34-38)

The harvest is ripe it was then and is now!

Amos 9:13 "Behold, the days are coming," says the LORD, "When the plowman shall overtake the reaper, And the treader of grapes him who sows seed; The mountains shall drip with sweet wine, And all the hills shall flow with it.

Are you looking to the harvest?

Are you participating in the harvest?

Matthew 9:37-38 Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.  38Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest."

2A.      Walk in Obedience (13:17-18)

1B.      Walking means following!

Luke 9:23 Then He said to them all, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

2B.      Walking means working!

Philippians 3:12-14 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.  13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

3B.      Walking means winning!

Isaiah 40:31   But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.
