17 And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
At the end of Jonah 1, we see that Jonah the prophet is facing death, because if a fish eats you, then you die.
But later we learn that this vehicle of death is really a vehicle of salvation. Jonah faced death, but this lead to the salvation of a gentile city.
In the New Testament, we learn about the “sign of Jonah.”
40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Both Jonah and Jesus had to go through the vehicle of death in order to save people, but notice an important difference.
Jonah faced death because of his own brokenness.
Jesus faced death because of our brokenness.
Our God went to the cross, not because he deserved it, but for us. He loved us so much that he went to the cross to fix our brokenness.
Let’s remember this as we partake of the Lord’s Supper.
