Review of Lord’s Day 5

Satisfaction is needed in order for us to escape God’s wrath.
We can’t make this satisfaction, nor can any other creature.
The Mediator who can satisfy for us needs 3 qualifications.

Lord’s Day 6 explains why He needs these 3 qualifications:

A MAN – Man sinned, therefore a man must be punished.
RIGHTEOUS – So He can be punished for sins of others.
GOD – So He is powerful to obtain and give salvation to us.

Question 16: Why must he be a true and righteous man?

Q16. Why must he be a true and righteous man? He must be a true man because the justice of God requires that the same human nature which has sinned should pay for sin. He must be a righteous man because one who himself is a sinner cannot pay for others.
Romans 5:12 CSB
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, in this way death spread to all people, because all sinned.
Romans 5:15 CSB
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if by the one man’s trespass the many died, how much more have the grace of God and the gift which comes through the grace of the one man Jesus Christ overflowed to the many.
1 Corinthians 15:21 CSB
For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead also comes through a man.
Hebrews 2:14–16 CSB
Now since the children have flesh and blood in common, Jesus also shared in these, so that through his death he might destroy the one holding the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death. For it is clear that he does not reach out to help angels, but to help Abraham’s offspring.
Hebrews 7:26–27 CSB
For this is the kind of high priest we need: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. He doesn’t need to offer sacrifices every day, as high priests do—first for their own sins, then for those of the people. He did this once for all time when he offered himself.
1 Peter 3:18 CSB
For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
Kailangan bang mamatay ng Tagapagligtas? See Heb. 9:22. So, bakit kailangang maging Tao si Jesus?

Question 17: Why must he at the same time be true God?

Q17. Why must he at the same time be true God? He must be true God so that by the power of his divine nature he might bear in his human nature the burden of God’s wrath, and might obtain for us and restore to us righteousness and life.
Isaiah 9:6 CSB
For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Deuteronomy 4:24 CSB
For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
Nahum 1:6 CSB
Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his burning anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; even rocks are shattered before him.
Psalm 130:3 CSB
Lord, if you kept an account of iniquities, Lord, who could stand?
Isaiah 53:5 CSB
But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.
Isaiah 53:11 CSB
After his anguish, he will see light and be satisfied. By his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many, and he will carry their iniquities.
John 3:16 CSB
For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
2 Corinthians 5:21 CSB
He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Question 18: But who is that Mediator who at the same time is true God and a true and righteous man?

Q18. But who is that Mediator who at the same time is true God and a true and righteous man? Our Lord Jesus Christ, “who has become for us wisdom from God – that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.”
Matthew 1:21–23 CSB
She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel, which is translated “God is with us.”
Luke 2:11 CSB
Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord.
1 Timothy 2:5 CSB
For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,
1 Corinthians 1:30 CSB
It is from him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom from God for us—our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption

Question 19: From where do you know this?

Q3. From where do you know your sins and misery?
Q19. From where do you know this? From the holy gospel, which God himself first revealed in Paradise. Later, he had it proclaimed by the patriarchs and prophets, and foreshadowed by the sacrifices and other ceremonies of the law. Finally, he had it fulfilled through his only Son.

The gospel is, therefore, the doctrine which the Son of God, our Mediator, revealed from heaven in Paradise, immediately after the fall, and which he brought from the bosom of the Eternal Father; which promises, and announces, in view of the free grace and mercy of God, to all those that repent and believe, deliverance from sin, death, condemnation, and the wrath of God; which is the same thing as to say that it promises and proclaims the remission of sin, salvation, and eternal life, by and for the sake of the Son of God, the Mediator; and is that through which the Holy Spirit works effectually in the hearts of the faithful, kindling and exciting in them, faith, repentance, and the beginning of eternal life.

Genesis 3:15 CSB
I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.
Genesis 12:3 CSB
I will bless those who bless you, I will curse anyone who treats you with contempt, and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you.

Now the Scripture saw in advance that God would justify the Gentiles by faith and proclaimed the gospel ahead of time to Abraham, saying, All the nations will be blessed through you.

The scepter will not depart from Judah or the staff from between his feet until he whose right it is comes and the obedience of the peoples belongs to him.
John 5:46 CSB
For if you believed Moses, you would believe me, because he wrote about me.
Isaiah 53:4–5 CSB
Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.
Isaiah 53:10–11 CSB
Yet the Lord was pleased to crush him severely. When you make him a guilt offering, he will see his seed, he will prolong his days, and by his hand, the Lord’s pleasure will be accomplished. After his anguish, he will see light and be satisfied. By his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many, and he will carry their iniquities.
Jeremiah 23:5–6 CSB
“Look, the days are coming”—this is the Lord’s declaration— “when I will raise up a Righteous Branch for David. He will reign wisely as king and administer justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. This is the name he will be called: The Lord Is Our Righteousness.
Micah 7:18–20 CSB
Who is a God like you, forgiving iniquity and passing over rebellion for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not hold on to his anger forever because he delights in faithful love. He will again have compassion on us; he will vanquish our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. You will show loyalty to Jacob and faithful love to Abraham, as you swore to our ancestors from days long ago.
Acts 10:43 CSB
All the prophets testify about him that through his name everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins.”

Hebrews 10:11–12 CSB
Every priest stands day after day ministering and offering the same sacrifices time after time, which can never take away sins. But this man, after offering one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.
Colossians 2:17 CSB
These are a shadow of what was to come; the substance is Christ.
What are the implications of these in our ministry?

There is nothing more important in Christian theology than our theology of the cross. We must speak clearly that the heart of the gospel is the good news of divine self-satisfaction through divine self-substitution. Never compromise on the cross. Never dilute the message of the cross. And never stop glorying in the cross where Christ accepted the penalties that should belong to us so that we can claim the blessings that would otherwise belong only to Him. — Kevin DeYoung
