Matthew 5:5-12

Review
Blessed does not mean an emotional happiness. Its not a feeling.
Blessed are those means they have a good position, God will do for them, well off,
Blessed are the meek.
Meek is to be gentle and lowly, humble.
What does it mean to be humble?
Romans 12:3
Philippians 2:3
1 Peter 5:5
How can we act in humility?
Those who are humble will see their need for Jesus. Those who are humble will see their sin and repent.
Pride is the cause of most sin.
Micah 6:8
If we are walking humbly with God we are going to want to do justice, and to love kindness.
So those who are meek or humble will inherit the earth.
Psalms 37:10-13
Those who do evil are not humble, the wicked will be no more, and their day of judgment is coming.
While those who are meek/humble will inherit the earth. We will be in the new heaven and earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.
When we are hungry and thirsty what is our body telling us? What are we in need of?
When we are hungry our body needs food.
To get food, we go to the store, and we cook food. We have to go out and get it.
When we are thirsty our body needs water. So we get up and go get water.
We should be hungering and thirsting for righteousness just as we do with food or water.
And just like we have to go out and get food, or get water, so it is with righteousness.
How do we seek out righteousness?
Deuteronomy 8:3
2 Timothy 3:16-17
But we also need to be practicing righteousness, doing God’s will and what He commands. and that is found in God’s word.
Blessed are the merciful.
Mercy is giving someone something they do not deserve. It is also
Concern & love for others
sorrow for the hardship of others
taking on the suffering of others
forgiveness of the guilty
intentional kindness
generosity
This list of the traits of mercy, who does this remind us of?
Jesus
If we want to know what mercy looks like and how to be merciful all we have to do is look at Jesus.
John 8:3-11 (Woman caught in adultery)
John 4:1-26 (Woman at the well)
Luke 5:27-32 (Jesus eats with sinners and tax collectors)
Mark 1:40-42 (Jesus heals a leper)
As followers of Christ we are to be merciful.
As Jesus said those who are merciful will receive mercy.
Proverbs 19:17
