sf982 - The Lamb Of God (John 1 29)
John 1:29
Introduction
The identity of Christ is essential to knowing God. Interwoven in Christ’s identity is His being described as the Lamb of God. If we are ever going to understand the nature of God’s grace and sacrifice on our behalf we must grasp this outstanding truth.
1A. The Lamb of God in Type
Revelation 13:8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain.
1B. A lamb was the first animal sacrificed because of man’s sin
Genesis 3:21 The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.
2B. The entire OT sacrificial system was built around offering a lamb
Exodus 12:6-7 You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it at twilight. 7 Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.
1 Peter 1:19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
Hebrews 9:22 And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
2A. The Lamb of God in Time
Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law
3A. The Lamb of God in Triumphant
Revelation 5:5-9 and one of the elders said to me, Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals." 6 And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth. 7 And He came and took the book out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. 8 When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying, Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.
Ø He still bears the marks of the crucifixion (5:6)
Ø Standing, He is alive!
Ø Seven horns symbolize His power.
Ø Seven eyes symbolize His knowledge
Revelation 5:11-14 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing. 13 And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever. 14 And the four living creatures kept saying, "Amen." And the elders fell down and worshiped.
