Godly Men Dealing with Ungodly Circumstances

Exodus 14:10-14

Exodus 2:11–15 NASB95

Now it came about in those days, when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his brethren and looked on their hard labors; and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren. So he looked this way and that, and when he saw there was no one around, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. He went out the next day, and behold, two Hebrews were fighting with each other; and he said to the offender, “Why are you striking your companion?” But he said, “Who made you a prince or a judge over us? Are you intending to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and said, “Surely the matter has become known.” When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.

Moses is the son of Pharaoh and he kills an Egyptian in defense of a Hebrew slave.

He is now been given a death sentence by Pharaoh.

Moses, like many of us goes on to live his life the best he can. He goes to Midian and he figures he has destroyed the nice life God had provided so he is now going to do the best he (Moses) can.

Exodus 3:1–5 NASB95

Now Moses was pasturing the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed. So Moses said, “I must turn aside now and see this marvelous sight, why the bush is not burned up.” When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”

The Lord hears His people groan, He remembers the covenant He made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

So what does God do, He goes and sends and angel to get Moses attention and when God has his attention, He begins to speak with Moses the murderer! The coward!

Moses then gives every excuse why God has picked the wrong man.

The staff

The hand

The water turns to blood

But Lord I don’t even know what to say.

I will give you the words to say.

I’ll tell you what, says the Lord, your brother the Levite, he can speak for you.

By the time Moses finally stops with the excuses and obeys God and speaks with Pharaoh, Moses is 80 years old.

Exodus 7:6–7 NASB95

So Moses and Aaron did it; as the Lord commanded them, thus they did. Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three, when they spoke to Pharaoh.

So, God displays His power and the truth of the promises of His word and eventually Pharoah allows the Israelites to leave Egypt.

They load up with all the plunder they were promised and they are off!

Now God does not take them the expected route, He takes down a route where they are now trapped between the Egyptian army and the Red Sea.

As Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel looked, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they became very frightened; so the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord. Then they said to Moses, “Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you dealt with us in this way, bringing us out of Egypt? “Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” But Moses said to the people, “Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever. “The Lord will fight for you while you keep silent.”

The same Moses who ran from Pharoah and hid in Midian is now the voice of confidence and security to God’s people.

What he could not do in his younger years, now oozes from him at the age of 80.

He is right were God wanted him to be. Moses had learned to trust God and had learned to see God’s hand at work and because of the maturity God had grown in Moses, the Israelites had a leader they could see, who followed The God they could trust.

What we need now is seasoned men of God, who are willing to lead God’s people into the promised land (God’s will for their life).
