What would you do for love?

______________________________

Some people are very limited in what they would do for love

Meatloaf (Marvin Aday)

And I would do anything for love Oh, I would do anything for love I would do anything for love But I won't do that, oh No, I won't do that

________________________________

I was reading a survey asking what people would do for love … the highest rated answer said the following

I will continue to care for an adult son who is mentally challenged and unable to ever live independently

I planted a rose garden for my husband with 50 rose bushes because my husband loves roses.

I want to keep my hope clean and have good meals for my family and friends when they visit.

I will talk on the phone when another son needs someone who will listen even when I really dont have the time.

Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II, Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Saint Valentine was placed in Jail.

While in jail he befriended his jailer, Asterious, who became so impressed with Valentine’s wisdom (He was a trained Physician before he became a Priest) that he asked Valentine to help his daughter, Julia, with her lessons. Julia was blind and needed someone to read material for her to learn it. Valentine became friends with Julia through his work with her when she came to visit him in jail.

Emperor Claudius also came to like Valentine. He offered to pardon Valentine and set him free if Valentine would renounce his Christian faith and agree to worship the Roman gods.

Not only did Valentine refuse to leave his faith, he also encouraged Emperor Claudius to place his trust in Christ. Because of this Valentine was sentenced to death by Emperor Claudius.

On February 14th 270 AD Valentine was taken from the jail, beaten to death with clubs and his head was cut off.

But before he was killed, Valentine wrote a last note to encourage Julia to stay close to Jesus and to thank her for being his friend. He signed the note: “From your Valentine.”

Love, A Godly Love… Agape Love is a very interesting subject within God’s Word.

I would be as bold as to say that most people who are lost have no concept of Agape Love and I would go on to say that most Christians have a underdeveloped view of Agape Love.

1 John 4:7–8 NKJV
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
__________________________

John wrote these words to the Christians believers who had weakened in their zeal for their faith. Some of this was due to heresies and the work of contending with them but some has to be associated with a shallow understanding of Gods love for each believer.

A. Love is of God.

The basis for love is often misapplied. The credit isn’t applied properly

Italian-American inventor Antonio Meucci first discovered that sounds could travel by electrical impulses through copper wires when he was trying to research how to treat electric shocks in the 1830s. In 1860, he conducted a public demonstration of his ‘electrophone’, and the cruelties of life came upon poor Meucci.

His paralyzed wife had to sell his invention for $6 to a secondhand shop, and in 1874, his patent was ‘lost’ by the Western Telegraph Company. Two years after that, Alexander Graham Bell introduced his own version of the telephone, with the blueprints he got from his lab partner Meucci. Bell got tons of money and fame from taking the credit of his friend’s idea while Meucci died penniless.

In the same way many try to make a claim on the definition of Love but in every case they are a poor copy of the original

1. Agape Love is not a feeling or emotion.

Many people mis-understand the positive feelings and joyful emotions that often come with their salvation experience as being demonstrative of their Agape love and if those feelings and emotions are absent then Agape love isn’t identifiable.

Look at this verse
Romans 5:10 NKJV
10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

Even when God looked at us as an enemy (That’s not a positive feeling… that’s not a joyful emotion) He poured out His Agape Love upon us.

But we do see that......

2. Agape love is a motivation for action.

John 14:15 NKJV
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.

3. Agape love freely sacrifices.

1 John 3:17 NKJV
17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

4. Agape love is best seen when we imitate Jesus

Ephesians 5:1–2 NIV
1 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
So Love is of God (Agape Love)
But also

B. God’s love is evidence of our our relationship with Him.

1. But its not this.

1 John 3:18 NKJV
18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

2. But its also not these

1 Corinthians 13:4–7 NKJV
4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

3. The only way the love you display points to a relationship with Jesus is if the love you display is exactly the same as the love Jesus display.

C. If you don’t have this Christ like love you are not of God.

Do you know what they call Diet Coke in Europe?...... Coke Lite

These is no Christianity light.

This verse points to two amazing principle!

At the very moment you are saved ...... you have the ability to mimic Jesus Love.

At the very moment you are saved…… you have the desire to mimic Jesus Love.

In the 60’s the offshoot of Hinduism came to America called Krishnaism , Hare Krishna devotees immediately upon conversion began to dress differently, they began to sale the movements literature and joined with others in public places to chant and sing...... you knew who they were.

The Bible says the only thing that allows people to know who we are is if we build Brick houses of worship!

The Bible says the only thing that allows people to know who we are is if we wear suits and fancy dresses

The Bible says the only thing that allows people to know who we are is if we sing certain songs.

NO ITS ABOUT LOVE!
