Introduction
Introduction
What are some potential reasons that a person might face opposition?
They have bad ideas that will not bring about good results.
The person’s ideas are too revolutionary for the group to accept.
The person is arrogant or unkind in the way that they present their ideas.
The opponents fear the person.
What have we seen Jesus do in chapters 4 and 5 at the beginning of His ministry?
Teach/preach/claim to be the Servant of the LORD
Heal the sick
Cast out a demon
Bring about a miraculous catch of fish
Touch and heal a leper
Forgive a man’s sins and heal his paralysis
Eat with sinners
In the different things that Jesus has done, He has demonstrated His power and authority and has forced those around Him to ponder His identity.
What responses have we seen to Jesus so far?
Hatred after His synagogue sermon
Amazement after casting out the demon
Fear
Disciples left all and followed Him
Crowds were generally in awe and glorified God
Pharisees have questioned Him
Beginning in Luke 5:33 and continuing through 6:11, we see three episodes of opposition.
We are again seeing something we have discussed previously, that Jesus’ identity, and therefore the message about Him, has a dividing effect on those who are confronted with Him or hear His word.
While disciples respond with total abandonment, giving up their lives to follow Him, the Pharisees offer total opposition.
