Psalm 1:1–6 ESV
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Main Idea - David sings that the happiest, and most stable man delights in the law, by meditating on it day and night.
Intended Response - Love the God who gave you the law
Bottom Line -
Big Question - What are you filled with?

Exposition

Blessed is the man

who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,

nor stands in the way of sinners,

nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

2  but his delight is in the law of the LORD,

and on his law he meditates day and night.

What is Meditation?

A man is blessed by not doing 3 things
Not walking with wicked people
standing w/ sinners
sit w/ scoffers
Godly men and women look to other godly men and women to find wisdom in hard times.
David is showing us that it is nearly impossible to apply our mind to meditation without first guarding our heart from the “wisdom” of the world.
“But”
Meditation
CSB Study Bible: Notes Meditating on Scripture for Transformation

The Puritan Edmund Calamy (1600–1666) defined biblical meditation as “dwelling upon the mercies we receive and chewing upon the promises.”

Meditation is not an emptying of your mind but rather an intentional filling of it.
Biblical meditation isn’t like eastern meditation

Why Meditate on the Law?/What is God’s law?

I have talked with many students who… Law is boring.
I get it!
Who wants to read “thou shall ____.” or “thou shall not ______”?
But there is beauty in God’s law.
God’s law is a reflection of who he is.
By giving us the law - God was revealing his very character to us.
God cannot be separated from his law
Look at some of the commandments
Don’t murder - God is life
Don’t bear false witness - God is truth
Don’t commit adultery - God is faithful to covenants
Loving the law means that we love the God who gave us the law
Meditation on the law is the act of knowing and loving God

He is like a tree

planted by streams of water

that yields its fruit in its season,

and its leaf does not wither.

In all that he does, he prospers.

4  The wicked are not so,

but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Two images?
What are they?
What are characteristics of a tree? Of chaff?
Trees - grow even when the wind and rain come
Chaff - gone
