SERMON - Pray for One Another

ILLUST: (on printout)

1) The Command - (Defined, and Why He tells us to)

Defined - talking to God.
Types: Worship and Praise, Thanksgiving, Supplication, Corporate/Agreement, Intercession
Better defined - talking to God, with the trust that He is listening
Psalm 17:6 NASB95
I have called upon You, for You will answer me, O God; Incline Your ear to me, hear my speech.
Intercession - for one another, trusting He is listening
Eph. 3:14-21
Galatians 6:2 NASB95
Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.
James 5:16 NASB95
Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
Col. 1:9-12
Colossians 4:2 NASB95
Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving;
Acts 5:42 NASB95
And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
1 John 5:14 NASB95
This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
Ephesians 6:18 NASB95
With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,
1 Timothy 2:1 NASB95
First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men,
Philippians 4:6 NASB95
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
WHY? OK, got it, but why, besides the command? Why do we do this? (or why should we?)
Salvation, healing, safety, and on and on
We pray for each other, because we truly desire these things for others. Right????
To align our hearts to His will (that’s a BIG deal, do you want your heart aligned to His will?)
Any reason at all. Lost dog, lost ring, come to God - ANYTHING!
Can I pray for __________________? Yes you can. Now....is that how God wants you to pray?
Psalm 37:4 NASB95
Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Experience peace of God - He wants to rule our hearts, our desires (this is for YOU for praying for others)
Because we love them (If we are not praying for others, what might that say?)
Because we want them to benefit, to be closer to God
Because we need each other
Because we desire to grow spiritually (Do we? Do YOU?)
Ultimately, prayer points glory to God
WHAT? More on the definition - WHAT it is
Standing in the gap for someone, as directed by the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit has directed me to do this today - this message, this urge for prayer
Prayer is our weapon against every revolt to God (all the bad stuff) - 2 Cor. 10:3-5
We seek God’s power in and during our weakness, and the weakness of others
e.g. someone experiences loss, crisis: we pray when they are weak
for them to know God’s comfort, peace, love, presence, to “be near”
Literally, standing in the gap
Ezekiel 22:30 NASB95
“I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one.
God desires people, men especially, to stand in the gap. God seeks those who will pray.

2) The Example - Jesus, of course, but others, too

Abraham - Abraham, prays for Sodom and Gomorrah
Paul - throughout his epistles
Moses - Ex. 32:10
Elijah, Samuel, and so on
And YOU
JESUS
Hebrews 9:15 NASB95
For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
Matthew 9:36 NASB95
Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd.
1 John 2:1–2 NASB95
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
He DID intercede for you - He DOES intercede for you
John 17 - Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer
Prays for His disciples, and then all believers - YOU
Disciples:
Protection, since He was leaving (REM - He sends the Helper)
To be sanctified by the truth (set apart)
That they would be unified - around the Gospel
Believers
Unity
To be “in God” so that the world will see God
and then trust Jesus
To see His glory - resulting in comfort, peace, joy
To know of Jesus’s love - selflessness - for everyone
And Jesus continues to do so
Hebrews 7:25 NASB95
Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
Jesus put His own interests aside (Oh, He still prayed for His own situations) - and gave for you, prayed for you, still prays for you. TODAY
And He wants us to lift others up to Him, for Him, just as He did, for you
“Not My will, but Thine be done” - that was a prayer for YOU in the Garden of Gethsemane!

3) The How, and Choices

Who prays? believers, living for Him
James 5:16 NASB95
Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
1 Peter 3:7 NASB95
You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
Prayer for whom:
Family, neighbors, community, leaders
Prayer For WHAT
Wisdom, knowledge, understanding
Proverbs 11:14 NASB95
Where there is no guidance the people fall, But in abundance of counselors there is victory.
God’s people need to be providing the guidance, led by the holy Spirit
Lost souls - James 5:20
James 5:20 NASB95
let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
Spiritual warfare
Matthew 6:10 NASB95
‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.
We pray for God’s will, for Heaven to be mirrored here, through US
Peace, comfort, provision, guidance, for answers
And this is private - “in secret” - Matt. 6:6
Matthew 6:6 NASB95
“But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
HOW OFTEN?
Without ceasing - 1 Thess. 5:17
Not meaningless repetition or babbling - Matt 6:7
Ephesians 6:18 NASB95
With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,
YOU WILL GROW BY DOING THIS! Are you ready for that?
It takes effort, choice, desire, priorities
Are you one who God can count on to pray for others?
READ Job 42:8

CLOSE - Heart check time

This glorifies God - reflects His glory
Reflect Jesus this way
Prayer may be the clearest way, the “easiest” way to be like Christ
One anothers
Unity, Love, Humility - mindsets that guide the rest
Serving, Forgiving - actions that are seen flowing from the mindset
PRAYING for others - focused action, designed to help others
Reflect God’s kindness - you do this on purpose because you are kind and want to - otherwise you won’t do it
Jesus wouldn’t have either, if He wasn’t kind
Draw nearer to God
Lift each other!
Let’s pray

Challenge - draw a name (explain)
