TITLE: RECOVERING YOUR MARRIAGE 2 - Change Yourself Not Your Spouse Introduction: Pastor George SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 30:6-8 Introduction: Pastor George * Today's message is inspired by the book titled "I Almost Ruined My Marriage" by ENO JERRY which can be purchased at www.enojerry.com/ * "Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was [a]grieved" How did David respond to his distress and the grief of the people which resulted in talk of stoning him? * He "strengthened himself in the Lord his God." - He worked on himself. 1 Samuel 30:6 * After David strengthened himself he inquired of the Lord. 1 Samuel 30:8 * He was in exile from Saul in the land of the Philistines and had gone to help them in a war with Israel but some of the Philistine princes did not trust him and sent him back. 1 Samuel 28:1-2, 29:1-3 * He went to this battle without inquiring of the Lord - He changed the way he made decisions to go to battle he now sought God's direction. Pastor Julia * First, you can't change someone else. You can only change yourself. * Secondly, trying to change your spouse will create tension in your relationship and actually discourage him or her from changing. * It's always easy to look at the other person and see how they've disappointed us, to see what they've done wrong in the marriage but Jesus said we should remove the log from our eye first. Matthew 7:3-4 * One of God's greatest desires for us is our growth and maturity; to conform us to the image of His son, Romans 8:29 * The Holy Spirit empowers us to "put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him". Colossians 3:10 * God wants to transform us through the renewing of our minds and give us new ways of thinking, interacting, responding and behaving. Romans 12:2 * The journey to a better person was a very tough one like Paul said in Romans 7:18-20. Conclusion - Pastor George * The Bible commands us to train our children. Proverbs 22:6 * We are commanded to love our wives and respect our husbands. Ephesians 5:33 Why are we busy trying to train our spouses?
