Text - 2 Tim 3.16-17
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Why study this subject
to help us understand why we believe the Bible to be God’s word for us
to help us have confidence when quoting and reading the Scriptures
The Word of God in different forms
the spoken word - the first to be received by those who became God’s spokespersons - prophets, apostles
the revelation, or revealed word
the written word - the words spoken by God were then put in writing for preservation
Scripture
the personified word - the thoughts of God expressed and personified in the Son of God
Logos - thought, idea; the expression of the thought or idea
Jesus Christ - the expression of all that God is, and the fulfillment of all that God has spoken or promised to do
The Bible is the Word of God
The Bible is the Word of God
The Scripture contains the “words” spoken by God to His servants
“the LORD said”
used 800 times
“Thus says the LORD”
7 Surely the Lord God does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.
8 A lion has roared! Who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken! Who can but prophesy?
1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,
2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;
37 If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.
The Scripture contains the words of God in its different forms
Psalm 19.7-9
7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;
9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
law - Heb. TORAH, instruction, direction, law
used to represent the whole collection of instructions from God
testimony - Heb. EDUTH, witness, regulation, warning,
a solemn statement made under oath
statute - Heb. PIQQUDIM, precept, direction, order,
a rule of personal conduct
commandment - Heb. MISWA(H) command, prohibition, right, claim
an authoritative instruction or direction to do something
judgment - Heb. MISPAT, judgment, custom, regulation, justice
a determination of right or wrong in legal matters
Psalm 119.1-16
1 Blessed are the undefiled in the way, Who walk in the law of the Lord!
2 Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart!
3 They also do no iniquity; They walk in His ways.
4 You have commanded us To keep Your precepts diligently.
5 Oh, that my ways were directed To keep Your statutes!
6 Then I would not be ashamed, When I look into all Your commandments.
7 I will praise You with uprightness of heart, When I learn Your righteous judgments.
8 I will keep Your statutes; Oh, do not forsake me utterly!
9 How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.
10 With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!
11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.
12 Blessed are You, O Lord! Teach me Your statutes.
13 With my lips I have declared All the judgments of Your mouth.
14 I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, As much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on Your precepts, And contemplate Your ways.
16 I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.
word - Heb. DABAR, speech, matter, thing, a word (from God)
also used to translate promise
word - Heb. IMRA, statement, promise, command, communication
God speaks to us through the Scriptures
the Scripture speak as if it was God
8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.”
God in fact spoke those words
17 For the Scripture says to the Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth.”
God spoke those words
God speaks as if He was the Scripture
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you will hear His voice,
the psalmist was in fact speaking here
35 Therefore He also says in another Psalm: ‘You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.’
David was the original speaker
10 For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.
The Scripture is Inspired Writing
The Scripture is Inspired Writing
It is God-breathed
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
Grk, THEOPNEUSTOS, God-breathed
It is not “breathed into” by God
IT IS THE DIRECT RESULT OF THE BREATHING OUT OF GOD
The writers were moved by the Spirit of God
21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
moved - Grk. PHEROMENOI, to be borne along
these men were carried, borne along by the Spirit of God
The words of God came in different ways
by audible voice - Moses, most of the Torah; Ezekiel, the minor prophets; Isaiah
by collecting materials and composing them into narratives - the gospel authors
by visions - Daniel
The Scripture is Witnessed to by Jesus Christ
The Scripture is Witnessed to by Jesus Christ
Jesus affirms the infallibility of the Scripture
It cannot be broken
35 If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),
It will all be fulfilled
18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
Jesus submitted to the authority of the Scripture
in His temptation - He referred to the Scripture
in His ministry - He referred to the Scripture
in His passion - He referred to the Scripture
in His defense - He referred to the Scripture
39 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.
45 Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust.
46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me.
47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
in His resurrection - He referred tot he Scripture
27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
