The story line of great movies.
The team went through crisis. Most of the Marshall University football team dies in a tragic airplane accident. And from nothing they seek to reestablish themselves.
An inner city fighter arises from the streets to become champion.
A hockey team overcomes inner struggles and lack of great athletes to with a gold metal against their seemingly invincible rivals.
Over and over the ones that are counted out by everyone, arises out of difficulties to win the victory.
And so we can excited by stories from the Bible. The insignificant become great. The little guys overcome.
Of course, the difference here is radical. While the seeming situation was desparate, there was never any real problem. If God is one their side, they will win. God will get the victory. There is no other result. And the struggle itself was purposely. The people needed to be transformed. The people needed to gain a perspective of faith. The Lord would win – the trials and tests were for the benefit of the people involved. The Lord always gains the victory. There can be no other result.
So it is in the story of Elijah. Set aside in a corner, God was at work in his life. Refining Elijah. And after the refining it was time to act. To take radical steps forward by faith. And of course as he does so, God gets the victory. In the lives of Israel. In the life of Elijah. The result was never in doubt.
And so it is also with us. We go through the fires. We face the tests. We endure and are transformed by the Lord. And then it is time to act. It is time to see God get the victory. The result is never in doubt.
Last week we finished with Elijah standing before the people. A people who still refused to choose God.
(ESV) 1 Kings 18 20 So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel. 21 And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word.
Today we see that the result is not in doubt. God gets the victory. He always does.
