Take your Bible and join me in The Gospel According to Mark chapter number 10, Mark chapter number 10 always count it a privilege to be able to stand behind the sacred desk and share the word of God with you. And as we song in song I'm thankful for my wife. She helps me the ministry in ways that I can't even begin to explain as well as others around here and I'm sure that you can attest to the truth of that song If you serve the Lord any length of time doesn't mean it's always smooth sailing with understand that but we do know that the longer we serve him the better it gets for us now. He's the same yesterday today and forever a man, but the longer he walked with him the more we get to know him the sweeter it becomes as we get to serve the Lord together. You're in Mark chapter number 10. I want to draw your attention down to vs. 10 vs. 17. Excuse me to 22 will read these verses and then we'll look at what God's word has forced this morning. Pastor Ward said I'm glad that you came out on this frigid cold Sunday morning and brave the elements to be able to come to the warmth of the house of God. So let's look at the word of God together now Mark chapter 10 beginning of verse number 17 wearied. And when he was gone for that is Jesus into the way there came one running.

And kneel to him and ask him good Master what shall I do that? I may inherit eternal life. And Jesus said unto him why callest thou me good, there is none good but one that is God, they'll know us the Commandments did not commit adultery do not kill. Do not steal. Do not bear false witness defraud not honor thy father and mother and he answered and said unto him Master oldies. Have I observe for my youth? I love this sentence then Jesus beholding him loved him. And said unto him. The title of my messages this morning is taken from this phrase one thing doll lackest. Go that way sell whatsoever thou Hast and give to the poor and thou shalt have treasure in heaven and come take up the cross and follow me.

And he was sad at that saying and went away grieved. For he had great possessions. There are six words taken from her text that some of the Savior suggestive commands to a young person who had one thing missing one thing that lakis. Let's pray Lord. I pray that you will help us to Behold. Thy word this morning to consider that these weren't words just for this young man on that day, but they've been recorded preserved given by divine inspiration for us here today.

Sometimes Lord It's Easy for us to become sufficient in and of ourselves.

We need to pause.

Think about who you are. Run to you like this young man did kneel down before you give you the reverence due your name. employer wisdom listening attentively to your gracious answer to know your steadfast love towards us. And as we encounter the truth of what our soul might be lacking. I pray that the sorrow that that would lead us to the heaviness that we might have to walk through would lead us to change our mind about our self-sufficiency. Lord I pray that we would come to the place we're seeing your goodness would turn us to you that we can rely upon you for all that we need. Truly your Our Savior and yet is you invited this young man the cross was before you. That's not something pretty Lord that we like to think about. But I pray you'll help us to understand what that means is we follow you to take up that cross in Jesus name. We pray help us understand your word. Amen. 6 positive things

6 positive things but that's only after the Savior reminded him of some negative things. That was in his life. Don't do this. Don't do that. Don't do this in the law. Don't do that. Make sure you do this in the law. Don't don't. And then he said do these six things instead?

In Jesus quoted these six Commandments that are set forth for this young man. And it summarizes our responsibility to those that are around us are neighbors that includes that which calls upon us to honor our parents who has we've seen they stand in the place of God to children in the home. The law said that in a limited has 18 5, which if a man do he shall live in them?

So this young man he doesn't appear to have a moment of hesitation that I can see master. All these have I kept from my youth. I've been a good person.

Outwardly, you know, maybe somebody like Saul of Tarsus comes to mind prior to his conversion on the Damascus Road. Post testimonium Philippians 3 of himself was touching the law. He was in all points blameless and hears this Rich Young Ruler here that we know him by really a lost young man. But a young man yearning for eternal life. He has the same opinion of himself that pull did. All Points, I'm doing okay in that regard. But there was still something deep down that was a vacuum that was a void that doing all of these things and keeping the law could never satisfy his conscience what he did not realize was that all human righteousness. According to Isaiah 64 is as filthy rags everything we can do that's a vivid way to describe our righteousness. If you study the language behind that I've pointed this out for those that have listened to me preach for any length of time, but I'll remind you because it always needs to be in the Forefront of our mind that the filthy rags that that's describing would be comparative to a leprous bandage leprosy is an awful disease that just consumed the entire body the Flesh and it just begins to eat away. And when a person has lived with it, my understanding isn't never had a delivery experience it but what I've read and what I've studied is that they begin to lose feeling in their hands and their limbs because of the disease and the the toll it takes on their body and so as they're walking, I mean it wouldn't take much to just open up a wound on your hand perhaps and so they'll take these bandages strips of cloth and whatever they can wrap it around that leprous hand just eating up with Leprosy so that it protects it at least so they don't open wounds on their skin when they don't even feel it happening. Somebody has to point out to them. Hey, you might need to address that. All our righteousnesses, let's undo that bandage. Okay, let's undo that wrap. Let's undo that cloth.

Do you want that you want to keep that cloth? Do you want to pass that cloth to your friends and family know? What do we do with something like that? That's fit for nothing, but the burn barrel friend. Because sin is a leprous disease. That's a physical picture of what happens to a spiritually and here's this young man. He knows there's more he knows there's something in him that is like this leprous disease and he's tried to do all of these things and it still hasn't cured him. The Lord Jesus has an answer for him.

Comedy on this doctor Ironside used to say - religion is a joyless religion, you know in a lot of people live there don't they? Don't do this. Don't do that. Make sure you come your hair right? Make sure you do this do this do that. Don't do this. All the negatives. They get focused on that and they think okay. I'm doing alright because I've gotten at least but they missed the relationship piece. They missed the walking with the Lord and they get weary in well-doing. Christian faith founded upon positives once we understand what Jesus did for the negatives that's that's a religion that's happy. That's a religion that's blast if you want to call it religion and James Defiance religion for us. It is to keep ourselves unspotted from the world. Think about that in light of what we just discussed with Isaiah 64:6 wondering how many today like this Rich Young Ruler would want something more than money can buy. You can't purchase this luxuries Pleasures possesses possessions. Do these always bring happiness. Not always.

One person described it as the stars of the stage the screen the Limelight famous pop music world many of these people if you get down to where they actually live when all the lights are turned off and everything is done for the day how many of them I wonder are truly genuinely content in their soul.

Well, I don't know that too many are considering the climb in escalation of the suicide rate.

Look how sincere look how hungry this young man was to find Jesus. What did he do? It describes him as coming running to Jesus in verse 17. I had to live my life for 14 years before I realized my need for Jesus to the point that it made me run to him. I don't know how I managed to muster the strength. It must have been the moving of the spirit of God that help me move from the Pew to the to the place where I kneeled in prayer was only by the grace of God that I found myself at the feet of Jesus casting everything. upon him Lord what do I do? What do I do? I'm like this young man. I did not have the same testimony. Mine was completely opposite.

But I love the fact that he came running to Jesus. What is it that causes us to run some have you no tried to explain it with psychology. We you know the fight or flight syndrome. This man was not running away from anything. He was running toward. What he deemed to be one who could help him with his dilemma. He was running to the one who he must have believed. He had the secret to the contentment that he yearned for. What am I missing? What what have I fallen short of?

He didn't just run. He also knelt. And I believe that shows how earnestly was also humility. He is coming in a posture. That is a beseeching posture. Lord I've got to have this I'm begging you. Don't let me to myself don't leave me without helping me find what I'm seeking. Here's a morally upstanding young man. He's kept all of these things the Commandments that was given to Israel from his youth as far as he's able he's been able to do that, but the commands stress that if you want your turtle life. Everything depends on your response to Jesus.

To be loved by Jesus. Think about that. It says here that he be holding him loved him. The question that comes to my mind and is being loved by Jesus enough to save you.

Is simply being loved by Jesus enough to get you over the threshold into the Gates of Glory? is simply being loved by him all that it takes to walk on those streets of gold someday. Is that all that it takes?

I would submit to you that no simply being loved by Jesus is not enough. Does he love you have absolutely, he loves each one of us that is never going to be enough until we realize what he gives this young man in the answer he provides. Jesus beholding him loved him these penetrating eyes that sees into man's innermost being Can you imagine how uncomfortable it would be to have the eyes of the Lord Jesus on you as you're asking him a question like this with this young man here.

The man's longing his his aching deep down inside. Morning for eternal life. I believe that moved our savior, I believe that he saw this young man and and his running his kneeling his question the way that he's lived his life up to this point. He's or 30 knows all of that. He looks at this young man in and he loves him. He's going to use this young man to teach his disciples some things to by the way.

I believe this is a special sense in which Jesus love this young man cuz not everybody has the same response to come to Jesus like he did do they how many other rich people would have done the same thing that this young man did for Jesus? I want you to turn over and read a verse with me that hopefully will help you understand where I want you to think about and Ponder this morning 2nd Corinthians chapter 13.

What read verse 5 together with you and 2nd Corinthians 13?

What this young man in the back of my mind at the feet of Jesus thinking about our own situation our own walk with Christ. I post you a statement by the Apostle Paul here in 2nd Corinthians 13:5. I'll take that as my proposition for you this morning to consider and work through what Paul says to you right here. Let's read it 2nd Corinthians 13:5. He tells them examine yourselves.

Whether he be in the face. prove your own selves No, you not your own selves how that Jesus Christ is in you. Except you be reprobate.

The way that Jesus looked at this young man. He look beyond the surface. He look past all of the religious devotion. He looked at this young man, and he loved him. And this is something that is peculiar to Mark its only mentioned by Mark that Jesus loved him the way he does hear some interesting details for me to note about this young man. One thing is necessary.

As we think about this one thing I want to unpack it with a way. Hopefully you'll remember six things about the one thing. How do you get six out of one? I don't know. How do you get dents out of life? I don't know. They're playing things in the scriptures that turned us from Darkness to light. They're things that I'll never exhaust about the word of God and how Jesus can tell this young man. One thing thou lackest and then tell him here's my outline for you. Go sell give come take follow. One thing that latches go sell give come take follow. One thing okay Lord. What is the one thing he lacked? If we can boil it down, I would submit to you that. this young man is lacking unrivaled allegiance to God

Did you really keep all the Commandments?

Has he ever had anything before God and his life before? It's interesting to me that Jesus is going to test him on the tenth commandment.

That was the one that got the Apostle Paul to by the way. Thou shalt not covet

Really we see these six things in two categories. go sell give come take follow. Right go sell gift would be the first part of that the come take follow would be the second piece of it.

And the man goes away sorrowed. Because the text is specific. He has he's grieve because he has great possessions.

Lorde I thought I've done pretty well up to now.

But you're telling me that none of this matters, and I've got to say goodbye to every bit of it. If he's Immortal young man, if he's up writing upstanding, he's probably been taught how to be a wise person when it comes to the handling of his money's I don't see him as being someone who be frivolous with it. There's some things that are hard to be understood that Jesus is going to tell him but for him in this situation, this is what he needed. go sell give come take follow. This is a particular form of self-denial that Jesus calls this young man, too. Let's look at the word go. Go implies to me direction this young man came asking you a question. He's going to get the best answer from the Lord Jesus Christ. Is he not? Here is wisdom personified and I believe that to be the case from Proverbs chapter 8. Jesus is wisdom personified.

And life poses to us only two choices on the Shelf pleasing God or pleasing self. Maybe you've heard that before and Proverbs lines that out for us with a contrast between two ways to high places. If you will better in the midst of the city, both of them are in Jerusalem and both of them are represented by a woman and in the earlier portions in chapters 5 6 and 7 of Proverbs where encountered the young man is that that Solomon is giving his wisdom and insight to giving him counsel advise the young man and his first he's met with Lady less. That's how I like to describe her in 5 through 7 and he's giving a grievous warning that she is doing things secretly. She is seducing and drawing so that she can destroy in the end. But it's allurement.

And then in chapter 8 he says but there's another lady there's lady wisdom. And she stands openly in the streets and she calls and invites all who will listen to turn to her. Her house is the temple. so you see What we do with making this choice on serving God matters. What must I do to inherit eternal life? Which path are you going to choose? Are you going to choose Mammon? Are you going to choose the last are you going to bow at the Temple of self? Indulgence are you going to follow that or will you say no to that and give undivided complete Allegiance? to the god of Heaven to Bow before him to worship and serve him. To give your life for him when Jesus tells this man go it implies Direction. Let's look at the attributes of this young man. I think many people are looking for direction today. Let's consider his attributes just by way of review just to summarize it. He's at he's got the right question. Could there be a better question he could ask? He comes to the right person is question is about eternal life. The person he asks is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. He's got the right question. He knows where to go for the right answer.

He got the right answer, but he did the wrong thing.

I pray that you don't do the wrong thing today. When Jesus gives you an answer.

I don't know of anybody find her. I don't know of anybody that I would want somebody to emulate in their life than to be a moral person to be an upstanding person.

Three living their life in the way that this young man does and yet he still did it wrong.

If you were a look at this young man and see him in society would say boy. That's it. That's a nice looking young man right there. He's a fine young man. He's upstanding. He's he's got it all together and he's got everything going for him.

He was eager. Number one. He was eager. He came running we mentioned that I thank God for that. Enthusiasm how many of us come running to Jesus? Sometimes we only come?

Sunday morning how many week how many of us ran this morning? Hopefully you didn't in the snow in the ice unless you skied here or something of that nature. You understand what I mean, though? It's been. A whole week since we gathered on Sunday morning since last time. This is the highlight of my week like my whole week revolves around coming to church and you think you're crazy. I love Jesus. I love his house. I love his people. They're my people. He's my God. I can't think of anywhere better to be than here. This young man said there's nowhere better for me to be right now than at the feet of Jesus and he came running. And I remember when I started serving the lord he had to work on me. He had to get some things out of my life. I had to go sell give so that I can come take follow and when I understood what it meant to follow I couldn't wait every time the doors were open every time I could run to where Jesus and his people were I was there. This young man was eager. He wanted the things of God. He was humble. In Mark 10:17, read it with me again. It says and when he was gone forth know this phrase into the way. You might read that and just say oh that's just he's he's going into the the road he's going into the way this man went into the way. That stands out to me that shows me some humility.

If you're going to go into the way with Jesus, you're going to go into a constricted are you're going to go into a narrow path. You going to leave the broad path of life and you're going to follow the narrow way.

This man came right in the middle of daylight. He didn't come like Nicodemus in the secret in the dark of night.

Here's this young man. As far as he knows in this timeframe of Jesus's Ministry Jesus is a is a peasant Prophet. He's a he's a man who people seek wisdom for he's a man who has demonstrated power to heal and it has a message from God. Jesus has not been to the Cross yet. This man has to decide is Jesus. Who is the one that's promised to come or not?

this man had courage

I don't see him really concerned too much about what everybody else thinks at this point when he comes and kneels before Jesus, especially given the reputation that Jesus was gaining around the religious leadership of the day. And if this young man has the kind of clout that a rich young ruler would have in that day. It's going to catch the attention of people who are concerned about the temples coppers if you know what I mean. He doesn't care about what they think he's come to Jesus on his knees right here in front of our savior this man had discernment.

He was eager. He was humble. He was courageous. He was discerning.

He said good master. I love the fact that Jesus not once denied the fact that he was good. Neither. Did he deny the fact that he was Dee Dee? To this young man. He said why are you calling me that basically? This young man saw something in Jesus good Master will maybe he's just respecting him. Maybe he's trying to you know, get an appeal and audience with him and I think he has discernment. He sees that there's something different about Jesus. Why go to Jesus when he could have gone to Nicodemus. He could have gone to another, you know, Pharisee of his day could have pleaded with any of his religious beliefs. They saw something different in Cheese's you said good master.

He saw something of the inherent goodness of the Lord Jesus. Yeah, he's a great teacher but he's so much more than that. Like he shared with a woman of Samaria he is. the Messiah by that speak with the in heat

He was spiritually minded. He's got an eye for Spiritual things. This man came to Jesus. He didn't ask for wealth. He didn't ask for his help. He didn't ask for position. He didn't ask for fame. What did he ask for? He's already got those things. He doesn't need those things. They don't satisfy. He's coming to ask a question about eternal life. What must I do to inherit eternal life. And that's a good question. You are asked that question if you haven't before

Because you have an everliving never-dying soul that will spend eternity somewhere. You need to ask a question about eternal life.

Your soul will be in existence somewhere when the sun the moon the stars have all grown cold. Your soul will be somewhere. This man was morally clean with mention that

outwardly he done everything you needed to do. He's intelligent. He's got all these things going for him. And so just take a look at this young man. Can you understand what the Bible says Jesus here looking at him. He just love them. He just loved them.

I God

maybe you know, it's not too hard to look at this young man and loved him. But I don't think that's the way Jesus loved him. To just be won over by him cuz he's Winsome. He's got a personality. He's an upstanding young man, though. I Think Jesus looked beyond all of that.

We have people like that, don't we but this man he's humble.

He needed Direction. Jesus said go. Gave him counsel he gave him wisdom.

The second thing he told him was cell go sell all that. You have what I find inherent in this word is the idea of relinquishment. Just let it go. Stop holding on to it. You don't know we get like the monkey with his hand in the cookie jar. Sometimes, you know that story he'll die with his hand in there cuz he won't let go of the cookie. I had a cat one time that was not very smart. He went through about eight of his nine lives in one instance because he got his head stuck in a milk jar. I don't know how he got his head in there and we did get him out just in time. I had to go plead with my dad to help me in and a he did he found a way to get through the glass and get you know are before the little thing suffered and suffocated. But sometimes we get like that don't we we getting ourselves we get ourselves in situations where we're in a predicament and we will suffocate this young man. He sees none of this is availing and he comes to Jesus. Jesus says you got to let it go. You're holding on to this Let It Go. Notice Jesus didn't ask him to give away the profits that he had made from his Investments.

Jesus didn't ask him to make sure he tithed.

Jesus asked him really told him to give everything away. All the possessions why because they were hindering him from attaining eternal life at this point in his life. Is money wrong in and of itself? We need to answer that question. I'll just touch it briefly no money in and of itself isn't the problem. It's the love of money. That's the root of all evil. The scripture is clear about that. Sometimes it's not the money that we have to relinquish to be cutting to be followers of Christ. It might be a hobby might be a habit. It might be something else a pleasure possession. It's different for different people, but Jesus pointed out. To this young handle almost as he went through all those negatives as we mentioned. He wanted this young man to see himself as a sinner bow down before a holy God. We cannot be saved from sin by keeping the law.

You read in Ephesians? The price that was paid for our Salvation it cannot be obtained by keeping the law. Go sell the third thing. He told this young man was give. Go sell gift now if I unpack that word. I see inherent in the word. Give a call to sacrifice. Do you want to word the tide of that tie the word sacrifice to it? The relinquishment had to be complete? He could have relinquished his possessions about selling them, but he could have done it at a profit and had more by the time he was finished. That would have been a sacrifice would it? go sell give Giving everything is the one thing that he lacked.

The one thing that causes so many to lose out on eternal life. Often times. We are called on to make sacrifices to become Christians to be followers of Jesus. Christ call to his disciple is take up the cross daily and follow to become a disciple. The cross is a mark of sacrifice. We beautify them we make them into ornaments. We have plaques that remind us of the cross in our lives and they're pretty things to look at the cross of Jesus's day was far from pretty it was the most gruesome way a person could be Capital the punished. and put to death and executed the cross equals Death the cross equals execution at the hands of ordained Authority take up the cross. It's a mark of sacrifice. So he's been pointing to the Commandments and Matthew explains quite explicitly that Jesus tells the man that if you want eternal life, here you go. You want eternal life? Keep the Commandments.

Matthew 1970 And he said unto him why callest thou me good, there is none good, but one that is God, but if thou Wilt enter into life. Keep the Commandments.

Paul explains to us that those who seek to gain life by obeying Commandments they have to do it perfectly.

And we're all there for cursed turn over to Galatians chapter 3 and read with me verse 10.

As you read verse 10 of Galatians 3, I want you to ask why is it? that everyone of us are cursed

for as many as are of the works of the law or under the curse hearken back to what I mentioned about leprosy in sin. For it is written curse. It is everyone everyone. none Escape everyone that continue Seth continuous not in and maybe one a circle this one highlighted underlined it draw arrows to it a a l l

cursed is everyone that continuous not in all things which are written in the book of the law. to do them I asked you why is everyone of us cursed?

because James also tells us that if we Endeavor to keep the whole law and offend in one point We're guilty of all. Paul said in Romans, 3:23 all all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. So here's pieces. He tells his young men. You want to get eternal life? Keep the Commandments. Just do that. Just keep them. Do all of them though. Don't miss one. Keep the Commandments. Jesus is not expecting the sinful young man. to gain eternal life by works in the Garden of Eden humankind broke that if we ever had a covenant that you could say was a covenant of works. It was prior to Genesis 3 I don't even know if I could go that far to say that it was a covenant.

But Adam was Immortal. He just hadn't send yet. He was not glorified. obviously because he fell

ever since the fall God has needed to give us Grace. in order for restoration to occur It's never buy something that we can do. Even repentance we've mentioned is never a work to be rewarded. It is only by grace that we find a goodness of God that can save us from our predicament that we can do. Nothing about any of ourselves. You want eternal life then keep the law. So whenever we see this happening for this young man here. It's a reminder of the Fallen that each of us possess our true sinfulness how there is no hope in our works why so that we might might turn to Christ. Let's look at of Leviticus 18 5 you shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments which if a man do he shall live in them? I am the Lord Romans 3:20 reminds us therefore by the Deeds of the law shall no flesh be justified in his sight for by the law is the knowledge of sin. was on Cross that Jesus would soon make the Supreme sacrifice for this Rich Young Ruler and for everyone else who's like him? everyone Go sell gift come.

When I look at the word, I consider the word invitation. Come Jesus didn't say go keep the Commandments and then leave him to himself. He said go sell give come. See Jesus knows he's going to fall short. He can't do it on his own. You want to do something to inherit eternal life. This would have to do love poor people like God loves them.

You say hey, you've always kept the Commandments prove it prove that you've done that without fault invest everything you have in the poor go do that. Just sell it all give it to the poor and then you will have treasure in heaven. Oh, there's something more. By the way, I'm going to a place called Calvary. And when I'm there I'm going to die on the cross and I'm going to invite you to come to come die with me. Sell everything you have invested in the poor. Let's go to Golgotha you hang on the cross with me?

Take up the cross. It's the cross according to Mark. Take up the cross. And follow me.

Not a lot of sugar in this medicine. Not a lot of sugar in this spoonful. But it was the medicine he needed.

Come now, come one and all come in. Whatever condition you're in. These are the ways that Christ used his word. Nothing need to just harass. Nothing need to delay us know we come to Jesus we can come at any time go sell give come. take we look at the word take and I consider inheriting that the word reception. If you want to word the tide of that tie the word reception to it. The invitation is being given, but it's one thing. To hear the invitation. It's a totally different thing to actually receive the invitation. I've done this before I've gotten invitations to go to this or go to that. The only ones that I've ever. Been able to say I was at where the ones I received. That is actually went and heated the invitation and then I got the nice steak dinner or whatever. It was for. I like invitations two steak dinners. Those are nice, especially when it's provided you like we're doing for the pastor this morning. I don't know if it's steak or not. But we've invited the pastor's to come tomorrow night for dinner.

And they can come and enjoy that the only ones that will get to enjoy it are the ones that actually receive the invitation and then let us know they're coming so we can feed them when they show up.

But you understand reception. Jesus can give the invitation but you won't enjoy it until you receive it.

His is he willing to Bear a present cross to take? What is it used to take? Not a steak dinner? I'm sorry to burst your bubble. It's a cross. He is to take the cross. This is a powerful word Matthew Henry said is he willing to Bear a present cross and expectation of a future crown? The young man was sorry. He could not be a follower of Christ upon easier terms that he could not lay. Hold on eternal life and keep hold of his worldly possessions to he went away grieved us to Matthew 6:24. You cannot serve God and Mammon. They must all be looked at in the Light of Christ suffering on the cross of Calvary. Whatever cross it is that we take has to be looked at in light of his cross. And then we'll be able to sing take up that cross. The Savior said if thou wouldst my disciple be take up that cross with willing heart and humbly follow after me. Follow go sell give come take follow what I see and hear in the word. Hallow is an identification. We identify with Jesus. We not only bear across like Christ, but we live daily becoming more and more like him every day conform to his image. Identifying ourselves with his will and his purpose for the world reaching out to try to see our friends and our neighbors are family saved and come to him. The word follow is Oskaloosa to follow up with another to take the same road that another takes Jesus walk the road of self-sacrifice of service to others of Separation. So to obey the instructions of Jesus. Would that have given them an eternal life note, the ladder one commentator said can only be had in answer to personal heart face in the atoning sacrifice of the our Lord Jesus Christ into the how do I say? Amen? That's a good comment. Obedience would have been the first necessary step for this man to take in order to become a disciple in order to become a learner of Jesus taking the same road with him that would have eventually it in his receiving salvation and an answer to his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior. This is what was keeping him from the ladder step. What was that his love for his wealth. 6 challenging words are followed by three tragic ones. went away Grease 6 challenging words go sell give come take follow went away. 3

He came for eternal life. Any left without it? of all the people who ever came to the feet of Jesus This man is the only one who went away worse than he came that I can read about.

Gary had so much going for him.

He was a young man. He had great potential. He was respected by others. He held some kind of ruling office. He was a rich young ruler. Maybe in a local court or something of that nature had manners he had morals. There was enough desire in his heart for Spiritual things that he ran to Jesus. He batted his feet and yet he went away grieved. He kept his riches, but lost God's real treasure. Two possible outcomes for the destiny of this young man. Let's consider it either. He becomes the rich man that I read about in Luke chapter 12, what's turn over and read Luke's account there Luke chapter 12

two possibilities

and Luke chapter 12 in verse number 15

He said unto them take heed and beware of covetousness for a man's life consists. It's not in the abundance of the things which he possesses a speaker Parable under them saying the ground of a certain certain rich man brought forth plentifully and he thought within himself saying what shall I do? Because I have no room where to bestow my fruits and he said this will I do I will pull down my Barns and build greater and there will I bestow all my fruits in my goods and I will say to my soul. So they'll has much Goods laid up for many years take danis eat drink and be married first 20, but God said unto him. Dial fool this night by Soul shall be required of the then whose shall those things be which now has provided so is he that lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. What is the first possible outcome for this young man that had great possessions and when we grieved even waste arafah This is a possibility. He laid up for themselves Treasures on Earth and they came to nothing in the end. a second possibility Well to conclude what happens along this course, you have to turn over and read Luke 16. I don't want to neglect that part Luke 16. There was another rich man there that in hell, he lifts up his eyes being in torments. That's the faithful end of all who trust in their riches will let me give you another possibility. And again, it is just a hypothetical possibility either this young man becomes the rich man of Loop 12, and eventually those rich man of Luke 16 1931, or he becomes the young man who followed so closely to Jesus that he left everything.

You know of whom I speak it's an account that's peculiar to Mark as well. And as we read in Mark chapter 14, we read about another young man who followed so closely to Jesus that was almost arrested with him.

And when all the disciples fled when Jesus was being arrested we read in verse 43 will begin their Mark 14 mediately while he gets paid come with Judas one of the 12 in with him a great multitude with swords and staves from the chief priests and the scribes in the elders and he that would trade him took him in had given a token saying whom whomsoever I shall kiss the same as he take him and lead him away safely. As soon as he was, he goes straight way to him and say it's master master and kissed him and they lay their hands on him and took him and one of them that stood by Drew a sword and smote a servant of the high priest and cut off his ear and Jesus answered and said unto them. Are you come out as against a thief with swords and was staves to take me I was daily with you in the temple teaching and you took me not but the scriptures must be fulfilled. verse 50 and all forsook him and fled. Notice verse 51 it intrigues me. And there followed him a certain young man. This is not a parable. This is not a fanciful story. This is and I witness account of somebody who was obviously there. Maybe it was Peter that gave Mark the recollection of this young man that was off in the distance, or maybe it was Mark. Who was there himself maybe? There followed him a certain young man having a linen cloth cast about his naked body the young men laid hold on him and you left the linen cloth and fled from them naked go sell old give come take follow.

if this young man Went away with a sorrow. That was a Godly sorrow that led him to repentance. He changed his mind about his possessions. He changed his mind about Jesus changed his mind about his condition before God. Maybe he did sell everything to the point where he had nothing left but a linen cloth, maybe he did instead of lay up his treasures on earth like Luke 12 said and like Luke 16 ends in torment. Perhaps it is a big perhaps I understand but does it not illustrate for a someone who was following so closely to Jesus that he had nothing left?

And he was following to where he was almost arrested with Jesus. Come take follow.

Perhaps the question for you this morning regardless of whether this young man is Mark whether it's the Rich Young Ruler the path for you this morning is which way will you choose the sorrow of the world that ends in death in Hell or will you choose a Godly sorrow that works to repentance and eternal life what must I do to inherit eternal life. You see theoretically there are three ways that you can get to heaven, theoretically.

Just like in baseball you get three strikes there, theoretically okay, you can first off you can die before the age of accountability.

Don't ask me what that age is it's not specified in scripture, but I do believe there's a time when the conscience of a person understands between right and wrong and understands. There's a penalty for wrong if you perish before that time if you die before that and I believe you'll be in heaven you can die before the age of accountability. Do you believe little babies? That died. Do you believe they go straight to heaven I do.

I hope you believe that because the Bible teaches it well you could die before the age of accountability. Do you understand what I'm saying?

All right, you got one strike? Because you missed that by now because you're here. one strike Okay, you're accountable. Alright Stay With Me the second way that you can get to heaven is you can keep the whole law.

number two only, theoretically You can keep the whole law of God. I mean never send in one single point in spirit or indeed. Has anybody ever kept the whole law of God now don't stand up.

Don't say that you have. Because you'll just be tell another lie. We all know that. Again, just theoretically here. Nobody can do that. There's only one that did in his name was Jesus and he died on the cross for us cuz you understand that you could die before the age of accountability. Number one. Number two. You could keep the whole law of God. That's why Jesus said, what does the law say not to show this man that he had kept it but that he hadn't kept it. Okay. So strike number two. The third way that you can get to heaven is you can receive Jesus Christ as your personal Savior by face. You can receive him as your savior and Lord. You've already got two strikes against you friend. There's only one way left. That's to come to Jesus and trust him who said I am the way the truth and the life no man cometh unto the father. But by me c.s. Lewis said there are two categories of people in the world those who are like Jesus and those who are like Satan those who are like Satan say not my will but mine be done those who were like Jesus say not my will but thine be done.

Not my will but thine. So everybody here is in one of those two categories. What's it going to be? Is it going to be my will or will it be thy will

not your will but mine be done that friend that kind of mentality will one day drop you right in the depths of hell.

The Lord will look down.

and say not my will but thine be done.

Lord is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. So when this young man went away it wasn't Jesus's will. It was his will. But Jesus watch now Jesus let him go. I'm talking to church members today. I'm talking to Family. I'm talking to friends. I'm talking to neighbors who need to be saved.

I'm talking to some people who have never been a member of anybody's Church. Who need to be saved?

What do we do? Go sell give come take follow. Won't you choose Jesus today and say Lord let your will be done not mine won't you play with me? Lord we bow before you we kneel before you like this young man. Did we plead with you? We understand we must have eternal life for this young man. It was go. So yeah, what if there's anything in our hearts and lives? It's coming between you and I we want to relinquish that right now Lord, we want to lay that down on an altar of sacrifice and say it's not worth it lord. It's all going to go up in smoke in the end anyway. Lord we don't want to cling to that to the point where we miss you old father. I pray that if there's one here today that is not Place their faith in Jesus Christ alone for their salvation. They'll understand that there is only one way. For them to get to heaven through face in your shed Blood on the cross bless the invitation Lord and I pray that someone would be saved by considering your word and your love in Jesus name heads about eyes are closed. Once you stand quietly to your feet not looking around want to be kind to our neighbors around us Christians are praying. I want to give you an invitation. Have you listen to Jesus? Have you heated his words he invites you today? Like he did that young man to come won't you come to Jesus? Maybe you already have maybe there's somebody that you need to be down here praying for that needs to come to Jesus. Don't stay where you are. If you feel the spirit prodding you friend pray that your seat making all too right where you're at pretty down Frontier with somebody. What's your burden that you carry come and lay it down to Jesus won't you heed his call come take follow. The invitation has been given the pianos playing if you need help on what the Bible says about Believing on Jesus we're here for you will take a Bible men with men women with women will show you how you can be saved. But if you're already saved then friend won't you come and say Lord? I'm going to take up my cross and follow you. I want your will for my life pianos play Christians are praying. The Lord is waiting.
