"Sacrifice your one and only son,” God said
3-day journey to mountain; Isaac carried wood for his own sacrifice, Abraham carries fire & knife
[Isaac:] “Here’s the wood, daddy, but where’s the lamb for the offering?”
[Abraham:] “God will provide the lamb, my son.”
Lays his son, his only son whom he loves, on the alter & binds him to the wood
He raises his knife over his son
Lord calls to him, “Abraham, Abraham! Do not lay your hand on the boy!”
And there, there was a ram, caught in thicket by its horns; God provided remedy, replacement for Isaac
It’s not hard for any parent to imagine how Abraham felt

Truth is, this world is not what it should be. It’s broken.
Things go wrong all around us & death haunts us.
It’s a world we want to get out of.
But we aren’t just victims, are we?
But we aren’t just victims, are we?
We’re rebels, murderers, racists, adulterers, & addicts. We’re thieves & robbers, backstabbers & slanderers & schemers.
We're proud sinners; gladly watch world burn out of lust, envy, & spite.
We’re the ones with the fire & the knife, sacrificing this world to the gods of our desires.
We’re the ones who deserve to be on the business end of the knife, to be on the altar.
We’re the ones who deserve to be on the business end of the knife, to be on the altar.
We’re the ones bringing the curse, making the world more like hell.
We’re the ones who have guilt that leads to death—eternal death.
We’re the ones who must pay the price. And we’re the ones that can’t pay it.
We need a remedy. We need a replacement.
And the time has come! God provides that remedy: His Son, His only Son whom He loves, Jesus
And the time has come! God provides that remedy: His Son, His only Son whom He loves, Jesus
9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Remember, John proclaiming baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins! Why would Jesus need that?
Remember, John proclaiming baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins! Why would Jesus need that?
Because Jesus is the Replacement.
He takes on a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins not to confess His sins, but yours.
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
It’s at Jesus’s baptism that God’s chosen people becomes the one man Jesus.
Jesus takes on the role of humanity, for humanity, to do what humanity can’t.
God Himself provides humanity’s replacement.
Remedy: Jesus goes to the cross for all people
Remedy: Jesus goes to the cross for all people
Jesus carries every single act of evil committed in human history as His own up the mountain to the cross
Jesus is the replacement; He is every rebel, murderer, racist, adulterer, addict, thief, robber, backstabber, slanderer, schemer
He suffers the hell that every person deserves. Jesus is the atonement.
Did you notice what else happened at His baptism?
Did you notice what else happened at His baptism?
Spirit hovers over Jesus’s baptismal waters just like He did at creation
Spirit hovers over Jesus’s baptismal waters just like He did at creation
Spirit like a dove, calling to mind the dove that flew over the waters of the creations renewal after Noah’s flood.
And did you hear what God said about Jesus? “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Sounds like when He declared His pleasure at end of every day of creation: “It is good, it is very good!”
Friends, Jesus is the replacement that ushers in the new creation!
Friends, Jesus is the replacement that ushers in the new creation!
Where Adam & Eve failed to care for creation & see to its wellbeing, Jesus steps in to take their place.
“If you want something done right, do it yourself!”
12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.
Spirit throws Jesus into battle w/Satan. Where Adam & Eve failed, gave in to temptation, Jesus emerges victorious!
Where God’s chosen people, Israel, give in to temptation over & over for 40 years in wilderness, God’s chosen servant, Jesus, goes into wilderness for 40 days to do it right!
You even have Jesus is in harmony with wild animals, just like Adam was in the Garden of Eden
Jesus is re-Edening the world, making creation new.
Jesus is replacement who takes your sin & makes the world right.
Jesus is replacement who takes your sin & makes the world right.
14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
You have a God who provides the Remedy for a broken world & the Remedy for your sin.
You have a God who provides the Remedy for a broken world & the Remedy for your sin.
