Who were the prophets in the context of Israelite history?
The prophets were God’s spokesmen who served to call the people back to faithfulness to the Covenant that they agreed to in the Pentateuch.
The prophets are often thought of as fore-tellers of the future (they did occasionally prophecy about things that are future, even some things yet future from our perspective), but they were more often forth-tellers, speaking forth God’s Word to His people.
The people had agreed to the covenant with Yahweh in the Pentateuch. (Deuteronomy 26:16-19)
One writer commented and said that the prophets are like the LORD’s prosecuting attorneys. They indict Israel on the charge of covenant unfaithfulness, demonstrate the evidence for the indictment, and call for repentance.
They also speak of the judgment that will come if repentance is lacking.
Finally, they offer a hope-filled message of restoration beyond the judgment that is coming for their covenant unfaithfulness.
