Intro/Welcome
What do you think about leadership?
Bad Leaders: “I used to think leader was a bad word”
many of us have had experiences under bad leadership
It can sour our view of leadership
Fear of Leadership:
How do you view leadership? Do you want to be a leader?
If so, why? If not, why not?
Why we may not:
Fear of responsibility/accountability
Expectations people will have on you
Fear of pride
I don’t want to become prideful
Fear of burnout
I am not good at delegating. I will burn myself out
Fear of difficulty
It will be hard. It’s easier to follow
The Importance of Leadership
“everything rises and falls on leadership”
As the leader goes, so goes the people
The world runs on leadership — it just does.
We are all following someone or something
Ourselves / desires / wants / thoughts
The World / Culture
The Devil / knowingly or unknowingly
God, through his word, spirit and people.
Leadership allows things to go forward
The Crisis of Leadership
We’ve seen a crisis in leadership in our country
We’ve seen a crisis in leadership in our churches
Ravi Zacharias, Bill Hybels, Elevation Pastor guy..etc.
At the same time there are hundreds of thousands of unsung heroes in the local church.
Biblical Leadership
All under God
Exodus 18:19 ESV “19 Now obey my voice; I will give you advice, and God be with you! You shall represent the people before God and bring their cases to God
According to God
Exodus 18:20 ESV “20 and you shall warn them about the statutes and the laws, and make them know the way in which they must walk and what they must do.
Qualified people (Able men)
Exodus 18:21 ESV “21 Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.”
Fear God
Their relationship to God
Exodus—Saved for God's Glory Spiritual Leadership

The first qualification concerned a man’s relationship to God. A good elder is a man who fears God, who reveres him and seeks to honor him in all he does. Such a man has a holy zeal for God’s name. Rather than pursuing his own agenda or fearing what people will think, his chief desire is to promote the glory of God. This means that he is willing, when necessary, to give people counsel they do not want to hear and to make judgments with which they do not agree. It takes a God-fearing man to do that. A man who fears God also knows the secret of all wisdom. The Scripture says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Ps. 111:10a). Therefore, to find a wise spiritual leader, it is necessary to look for a man who fears God.

Trustworthy
Their relationship to others
Hates a bribe
Exodus—Saved for God's Glory Spiritual Leadership

A good elder is reliable. He is trustworthy. He keeps his commitments. He is characterized by honesty and integrity. In particular, he is not greedy for personal gain. The reason for this is obvious. As one of Israel’s elders worked to resolve various disputes, the opposing parties would try to persuade him to decide in their favor. Some would try to flatter him, while others might even resort to bribery. Only a man who hated dishonest gain could be trusted not to corrupt the course of justice.

Representative People (Ryken) / “from among all the people”
Exodus 18:21 ESV “21 Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.”
Exodus—Saved for God's Glory Spiritual Leadership

He should not choose elders from among his friends or from one particular group of Israelites, but from across the entire nation.

The people actually elect them

While it may seem from this passage that Moses autocratically chooses his own staff, the actual election is the work of all the people (see Dt. 1:9, 13).

Shared Leadership
Different Roles/Responsibilities
Leaders of 1000s, 100s, 50s, 10s
Exodus 18:21 ESV “21 Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.
Empowered: They decide small matters, larger matters escalated
Moses’s Role: Prophet
teach the Word of God and they Way of God
Exodus 18:20 ESV “20 and you shall warn them about the statutes and the laws, and make them know the way in which they must walk and what they must do.
Results
lightened load/easier to bear
shared burden
Exodus 18:22 ESV “22 And let them judge the people at all times. Every great matter they shall bring to you, but any small matter they shall decide themselves. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you.
God will lead you
You will be able to endure
People will have peace (shaloam)
Exodus 18:23 ESV “23 If you do this, God will direct you, you will be able to endure, and all this people also will go to their place in peace.”
