MARK 6:1-6
1 Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him. 2 And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! 3 Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him. 4 But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.” 5 Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.

Dorothy in the Wizard of OZ
Released Aug 25, 1939
Judy Garland played the leading role of Dorothy
She made a lot of great friends along the way like the Tin Man, The Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow
Even saw some amazing things happen along her journey
She would click her Ruby Red slippers together and return home to Auntie Em.
There’s no place like home for the Holidays...
Home for many is considered a place of comfort, a place of warm receptions and happy memories.
But for some and for Jesus, the thought of going back to your home town might be one that brings back difficult memories, and not warm receptions and happy hugs.
Brings back the thought of Ridicule and Rejection
Title: Renowned, Remembered, Ridiculed and Rejected
MARK 6:1-6
1 Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him.
“Went out from there”: Capernaum
“His own Country”: Nazareth
20 mile journey
2 And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands!
His Teachings and Works were Renowned. (V:2)
Astonished: To be amazed or Astounded, overwhelmed
Luke 2:46-49
Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. 48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.” 49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”
At a Young Age Jesus was astounding people because of His intimate knowledge of the Lord
Mark 1:22
And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
“Where did this man get these things”
This phrase shows us that they did not think his wisdom and power was His own.
Kids say the darnedest things...
Timothy Saying Colossal
What do people say of you?
Are people blown away or astonished of your intimate relationship with the Lord /Your testimony
Where did you learn that?
How do get through life with peace
How did that happen?
How did God Show up?
Its an opportunity to share your Testimony
Mark 6:3-4
3 Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him. 4 But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.”
He was Remembered but Ridiculed. (V:3-4)
“Is this not the carpenter”
He is a common guy like the rest of us...
They Acknowledged his humanity but not His Divinity
“The Son of Mary,”
This was a slanderous, an insult and derogatory phrase
In Jewish culture a man was not described as His mothers son, even if she was a widow.
So they were offended at Him”
They were offended because in their mind He didn’t fit the bill or have the credentials to teach them.
1 Corinthians 1:27-29
Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful.28 God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. 29 As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God
Luke 4:24-29 - Jesus in Nazareth
But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.25 “Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land. 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner—a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon. 27 And many in Israel had leprosy in the time of the prophet Elisha, but the only one healed was Naaman, a Syrian.” 28 When they heard this, the people in the synagogue were furious. 29 Jumping up, they mobbed him and forced him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They intended to push him over the cliff,
Their Offense almost lead to His Death
But His Death was to clear us from our offense
The Sign on the trail
The words Jesus was sharing with them was to give them life, protect their life
They didn’t like the truth he was sharing so they wanted to remove Him
Original Cancel Culture
They didn't acknowledge his Divinity and questioned his legitimacy
The Serpent in the Garden (Gen 3:1)
“Did God Really Say”...
What is the Lord speaking to you, that you just don’t want to listen to
Remember He wants to Give you life
He was training and teaching the Disciples that they will face persecution too
Jesus’s Ministry here was just as much to the people as it was to teach the disciples on how to minister
Matthew 10:22-23
And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved. 23When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
Persecution has a promise
Matthew 5:11
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Mark 6:5-6
5 Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.
He Recognized their Rejection. (V:5-6)
Where there is no faith in the Lord, there are no Works of the Lord
Mark 5:34
Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”
James 5:14-15
Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well.
What are you walking through on your own that you need to take to the Lord
Marveled: To look on with amazement
How will Jesus Marvel when he Looks on at our lives
Matthew 8:10

When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!
